Oh come on.....live a little, try the Riken Raptor ZR for $64
I wouldn't overlook the summer Kuhmo tires either. I've run them on a few different cars and never disappointed. Reality is, even the cheapest summer tire is going to be light-years better than anything on the market back when these cars were new.
Local owner has Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's on his 86, likes them so far.
I have BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2's on my wide phone dials, 245 & 255's. So far so good, even on a cold rainy night.
I'm holding out for new retro P7's for my stock phone dials.

Full disclosure, I only picked them since I wanted 255's on the back and there isn't much else to choose from. Past experience with other BFG's were good so I figured they would be fine.

I've actually used those Riken tires and they are actually pretty decent. The compound is soft but they aren't noisy and they grip moderately well.

That's good to know. They are so cheap I debated on buying a set for some spare wheels just so I could use them.

In the beginning their great, 12-18,000 miles later the noise starts, still plenty of tread, but a steady drone.

12-18,000 miles later they get noisy? Isn't this about the time you should be replacing them? Rears on Porsches for me anyway are good for about 12 to 14k and then they are close to the wear marks. I look at tires like changing the oil. Good tires and oil changes are cheap insurance in the long haul . My guess is that an 18,000 mile tire on an average 928 is beyond the wear date and is hard as rocks.

Well said! Spinning around in my 928 wasn´t a good feeling! The broken left frontcorner cost as much as lifetime tire supply for my car.
Especially the automatic transmission is in wet, cold conditions sometimes dangerous.
But maybe the problem is my heavy right foot. ;-)
