Default Fuel line warning

Hi everyone, a quick introduction - my name is Simon, bought my first 928 a year ago and have been completing an intake refresh and all the other issues that affect these cars.

The two flexible fuel lines have been replaced on my car and I thought everything should be OK but worth checking. On inspection of the solid or hard fuel line that runs from the right hand side strut tower to the fuel pressure regulator at the front left side of the motor I noticed a rust patch under the rubber support area on the line. I ran the fuel line under the wire buff wheel and you can imagine my surprise when I spotted the pinhole as shown in the photo below. So just because you have changed your flexible fuel lines always check then all.

I would like to say thanks to everyone for all the advice offered on this forum and thought this is my chance to pass on an issue I have discovered (I hope there isn't another thread about this).

Chloride pitting attack from some South Pacific sea salt perhaps?

Great catch and thanks for posting this. Exact model year of your 928?

Interesting...I'm pretty sure you are the first to report this failure point. I originally ordered the stock style hose that Greg makes. I received the alternate style that does away with the hard line, and let Roger know I was fine with the alternate design. Your post makes me more satisfied with the decision.

Good stuff, thanks for posting.

However, not to over analyse, the perforation looks remarkably uniform, along with a slight "indentation/inward creasing" surrounding the hole, maybe the photo playing tricks?

The reason I bring this up is just in case there is some debris or deformation in the clamp area, that may press into your new lines creating the same problem, FYI.

Had the same problem on my 88S4, a lot of corrosion on the pipe and clamp, replaced with a good used item, can't remember if I reported it to the list.

I noticed this also. Almost looks like it was drilled. The only kind of corrosion I've seen pitted like this is bimetallic corrosion....the metal kind of erodes just at the point of contact.

Not a problem Guys, I am happy to contribute back to this forum for all the help I have received.

My car is a 90 S4 and this car has spent most of its life somewhere near the ocean - this car has also spent some periods of its life sitting (the steering rack shaft is also showing signs of water sitting and causing corrosion).
I would believe that the clamp and moisture held within would have caused this corrosion - hence why the clamp was removed.
Interesting observation on the corrosion surrounding the hole - yes there is definitely noticeable creasing around the hole - not sure if this is just more corrosion or if the metal is failing, almost looks like a drill hole.
