Default Panorama cover puzzler...

I think this cover triggered a few brain cells when I saw it, but I didn't know why until I read the corresponding article carefully. Care to guess?

I think I might have some concerns about using wheels that were designed "not to exceed 50mph/80kph...."

I sold 4 spares a few years ago to guy that was building an early 911, to run them as regular wheels I think.

Close. Very interesting if they were yours. And I noticed that only four are involved in the subject of the article, not five.

I think jheis had the answer, but held back a little. These are modified 928 spare wheels, with extra holes, for a "Gesetzloser" (outlaw) 356. I don't have the magazine handy, Adam, but I'll post the names of the owner and builder - perhaps you'd recognize them. It would be cool if these were yours.

Owner: Fred Veitch
Builder: Randy Bowen
Wheel maker: Frank Petersen

Relevant text: "The wheels are re-engineered 928 S4 16-inch spares that were sand-blasted. Morrison, Colorado-based Frank Petersen drilled a second set of holes, reminiscent of the early Porsche lightweight hill-climb wheels and held in place by Tikor titanium lug nuts."

Adam: any of these names ring a bell?

I just found myself thinking of a 928 body set up high on pulled-in skinny tires, like a 356. Maybe I'll photoshop something...

You got to be soft in the head to drill all those "outlaw" holes and then drive down the road with it.

The 356 weighs about 2,000 lbs and maybe 90 hp.....so far far less stress.

This is a picture of a little sculpture that I got from the artist, Larry Braun, many years ago. He said this includes a wheel adapted by Porsche from another kind of car. The wheel started life as a complete steel disk and then was drilled by Porsche and adapted to an early Gloeckler (sp?) Porsche for hill climbing. It is probably a pretty accurate rendition.
