Default Help me make a silk purse from a sow's ear

The car I saw on eBay was http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6432 and the VIN #is 9289103047.
Me and a friend of mine want to work on it together as a project car. I need assistance if this is the right car. I don't really know a lot about Porsche in general so... I am willing to buy the Work Shop Handbook if I buy the car or something and read it over and over again so I do not make any mistakes. It would be great to have you guys post advice for me. and if i should buy the car or not.
And is the car hard to maintain?? or is the car hard to rebuild? And if the car is hard to maintain whats the problem?
Thanks.

Unless you want a track car, you should really think this through.

For the money spent just in PARTS to get it good again, you could buy a nice 85 or 86 5spd.

Please be warned.

For me the its the rebuilding part that is the most fun part; and the final result. I mainly want a manual for this types of car. What is the estimated price you experts would say from the pictures from that ebay place?? And I can't find any other 928 cars from either locally or online that really got me.

Cool

Leth,

You can easily spend $10-20k on parts on that mess. Porsche parts are very expensive.

I would not spend the $600 on it.

You mention the work shop manuals. Let me know where you plan on getting these from, I need 2 sets. I'm not talking about the CD version either.

I agree with the others. This almost doesn't even qualify as a parts car. Its rough.

If you want a project, buy a running 1980 with no records.

I really like your porsche Big Dave. Aren't they all wide or is this a unique car? Then what should I do Thom1 if you say you wouldn't spend that much money on it. I really want a 928.

What do you mean no records??

What about http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting or http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6432 or http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6432

I really really want a manual though... that's why I even considered the first car(the black one).

My advice: steer away and pass it up. Parts cost alone would not make it worth it. There are better examples for a few thousand dollars more and you will get twice your value in parts alone (and it may even run!). If you can spend at least $4-$6K you will get a MUCH better car and don't worry - there are always plenty of repairs for you to do on early 928 (or any other 20+ year old) cars.

Just the rear taillights and drivers side interior will set you back more than its worth.

The guys on this site are great and would not lead you astray.

My advice - buy it and experience the satisfaction of rebuilding a 928 at 3 times the price of buying a nice one to start with.

Let us know when you need help.

That car could cost you thousands and thousands of dollars before it is safe to drive and half-way presentable. For parts cost, figure what a Chevy part would cost and then multiple by 2 to 6, or more, for the 928 cost.

As an example, if that gas tank is cracked, which I'd guess is why it's in the front seat, a used one will be $200 on eBay, $450 from a business or $950 new. Those tail lights are $20 to $75 a piece. A decent interior will be $3000 used!

If you've got a whole pile of money for fun, go for it. If you think that for $2000 you'll be showing off a bitchin' Porsche, you're in trouble.

I have a widebody project 928 that was once beautiful (picture on bcdavis web page)...and is currently in near perfect running condition mechanically and electrically...

AND STILL ....it will cost more than the price of a perfect S4 to get it back on the road again

...and since you're saying you're not familiar with these cars...

you should get a running 928 that is more conventional in its setup, especially if you'll be depending on help from others...you never know how much the previous owner deviated from stock electrically and mechanically...[ask me how I know that]...in which case help from others will not get you results

this car belongs in the shop of someone who's taken these cars apart and put them back together more than once before

...but just my opinion

So which one should I buy out of the these 3 cars?? :
1) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...bayphotohosting
2) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...3&category=6432
3) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...6&category=6432

IIf you guys know some place thats more nice, tell me please. I personally like the europe one better, the 3rd choice.

One more thing....(And I concur with all that is being said above!)

From the VIN (and the Op-art interior) I think that this is NOT an '80...but a '79....decent amount of differences in the two OB's!

I am currently converting a '79 in about the same shape into a track car...stripping EVERYTHING that is not necessary...it is still a LOT of work and a LOT of money! and I am barely getting started.

LethargyTM,

Consider maxw's (his screen name here) 1978 928 5-spd with around 100k miles...nice looking example especially for the money ($5k or so). However, it is too nice to make into a track car. Might be a neat "project" but I don't know if it needs enough work to give it this moniker.

Take your time and run your "candidates" through the distinguished "928 selection committee" here on the Forum.

Best wishes on your search,
Tim
