Default 79 Petrol Blue w/Cork Pasha

I have been meaning to put this out here for some time now but just haven’t had a chance. I will get to the punch line first which is I picked up a really sweet 79 Euro Petrol Blue with Cork Pasha interior! I absolutely love this car!

So to back up a bit I will give you a little history. I got into 928 ownership again in 2010 after about a 15 year absence. I made a deal on a really nice 90 GT that I have been very happy with. Then about a year ago Mark Anderson listed a 93 GTS for an awesome price that I quickly pulled the trigger on. I figured I would use it as my daily driver instead of racking up more miles on my pristine 70K mile GT. One month later I picked up a special needs 85 Euro out of Canada that had never been federalized. Again, too good of a deal to pass up although I was looking for an 86 Euro but close enough. At that point I figured I was in good shape and really didn’t need any more 928’s. Although I had already warned my wife that if I could find the right early model I would probably get it and round out the collection nicely.

So back in November I head down to 3rd Coast a happy camper with my GTS. All is well but the first night in I get word that Brent is selling his 91 Euro GT. I was familiar with the car as I had seen it at previous events and it is gorgeous! We talked for a few minutes and I made a deal to buy it as it was really too good of a deal to pass up. I guess I will start another thread for that one. Anyway I was talking with another 928’r the next night who wasn’t all too happy with some yahoo who bought the Euro GT that he was planning to make a deal on. Once we got past all that I was telling him how if I were to buy another my perfect combination would be a Petrol or Minerva blue OB with cork pasha. He said “really?” and showed me a pic of a 79 Petrol blue and cork pasha that he was working on at the shop. Here again I went straight over to the shop owner and told him that if the Petrol owner would ever want to sell it to give me a call. Guess what happened 6 weeks later? YES, they want to sell it!

I headed down to DFW that weekend to take a look. Turns out that this guy had bought the car, presumably from the original owner, in 1985 when it was imported into the US. His wife was getting work done in hopes to get it driving again for her husband as he has progressing health issues. They finally decided that it wasn’t practical and decided to sell. After a little back and forth we were able to make a deal! They are a very nice couple and it put him at ease that it was going to a good home and they seemed to enjoy my enthusiasm with it.

The car is mostly original except for the paint (Glasurit in 2000), the radiator and the muffler. The repaint was to the original Petrol blue color. It came with all of his receipts going back to 1985 including importing docs and service stamps in the owner’s manual for when service was performed in Munich where it was sold new. Mechanically I need to go through all the rubber bits under the hood and tend to the interior. The carpet needs replaced and both front seats need some work. The passenger side is faded and driver side vinyl is torn. The dash and pod are perfect and the original stereo is in place. It is mostly unmolested and just a thing of beauty. I plan to get this car back up to a very nice condition and enjoy it. Out of the five I have this one and the Euro GT are currently the “keepers”. When I drive both I love how similar yet completely different cars there are! I haven’t had much time to work on it yet but I will post updates as they happen.

I went to 3rd Coast for a fun weekend and ended up with two more cars that I wasn't even planning for. Crazy how things work out sometimes.

Brian

Wow, great find and story! I love that color too.
Now, get the correct intake air tubes (reproductions) from Jim D. and that will make that engine bay look more original.

The "fahrzeugbrief" is the registration papers for a car in Germany. I guess same as a "pink slip" in US. A very important document for a car in Germany.

Fantastic car.

Great find!

And you even have the Fahrzeugbrief

This document is very interesting, because it lists the owners of the car, when it was in Germany.
1) MAHAG PZ. Registration M-VL 3965, from 09/10/1979.
MAHAG was and still is the big Porsche Center of München so your car was certainly used as a company car by them.
2) Mr Mansberger also from München, so the car has kept the same registration, from 02/29/1980.
3) Mr Rozenchwajg, also from München, still the same registration, from 03/06/1981.
4) The car was exported from Germany in November 1983.

And you also have the confirmation of the production number of the car (129 4972) on the bottom of one of the pages!
