As I understand it, Big Bird has forged internals and is prepped for running boost. I would say that car could be very reliable as a track car.
Jeez, I wish my 928 weighed in at 2700 lbs, then life would be perfect.

forged pistons/rods/stroker crank. heavier head gasket, slightly decreased compression, electromotive ignition system with egt sensors. yup, set up to run at least lower levels of boost pretty reliably.

It should be a heck of a lot faster than 2:10. remember Speed Touring on street tires are at 2:11 and the GT group is 2:01 to 2:03 on street toyos. generally, the holbert car is around equal to 1-2 seconds slower than these guys, especially last season, on the toyos. There were a few oof the slow guys running 2:08s, so I would think that the Tilo Big Bird machine should be in the low 2 min when pushed. I think, to make a goal, it should at least, be as fast as the top 10 times on those street tires, which means 2:03. Now, on slicks and after Tom gets it dialed in, there is no reason it shouldnt be a sub 2 min car!
When Mark Anderson and Tilo ran it at buttonwillow many years ago, they ran a 1:53 with the supercharger firing. 2:00 when it blew the main pressure hose, and then became a standard 6 liter 928 , at a Touring car Speed fest race!
I have lots of video of this car at that race if anyone is interested. pretty funny to see me drivng hard and drifting to the outside of a birm before a long straight, and then WOOOOSH, goes by Tilo like Im standing still!@!!!!!!!! I remember the times, as that was my first race season.

The car is far more solid and balanced that I expected. . Tom needs to calculate the terminal speed at the end of the VIR back straight, which was awesome! Easily pulled a 996 TT.
Its a little hard to estimate what the car will do when Tom gets it sorted and refines some shifting and transition techniques. My guess is that this is at least a sub 2:10 car on VIR, and may be closer to 2:low. Impressive!
It will be interesting to see next season, when the Big Bird starts to mix it with the higher run groups. I'm sure its going to surprise a few people.

I should have stroked the Bastard while I had the chance...
Big Bird should be real reliable on 8 or so lbs of boost. I assume it has 951 pistons in it? I wanted those too, but boring from 95 mm out to 100 mm was waaaay too risky, so I went with the 2618 JEs on Nikasil. Thus far it has been reliable.

it has custom 100mm forged mahle pistons, forged rods and a devek crank, cross drilled, etc. put together by a very reputable shop in northern va. presently runs about 6.5 psi boost.

The engine in the "tilo car" as I recall was during the most recent rebuild ( that I know of ) sleeved with steel liners and domestic pistons (standard 944 race practice ) I know I had spoken with the shop doing the work and they were at least considering sleeving at the time due to a damaged scored block ? The engine does have a Scat/Devek crankshaft which given the experience of Scat they make a pretty good crank for the money . The car is now in the hands of someone who knows how to work on 928s and does not have to PAY technicans . Tom should be able to get it all sorted out and hopefully find the reliability that has been lacking .

jim,
thanks for the vote of confidence. i will still pay people to do certain work for me though.
the consideration was given to use sleeves in the original block that had been scored by a blown head gasket (lean on #6). ultimately though, a new (used) block was found and the motor was rebuilt as i mentioned above. retuned with electromotive using exhaust gas temp sensors to help solve the lean condition. the engine builder and i have had many long conversations about the car and motor prior to and after my purchasing it. fortunately he lives less than an hour from me and is usually at the track events that i run. the original block is in my hands also, so if i do need a spare, it can be sleeved.
z,
i'm considering road america, but it's a long trailer ride...

If you get 6 people together you can get a transport truck for pretty reasonable. When I did it last it worked out to $1,200 per person. I will say that Road America has been at the top of tracks I have enjoyed the most and the people there are terrific.
Round up the troops,

Mark, I will drive my car to your place if we can get you, Joe and a couple of others to jump on a big trailer.
Road america here we come!!
So, Tilos is now a 6.5 liter or still a 6 liter stroked 100mm piston'ed engine.
