One of if not THE most awesome 928 on the planet back in action
Some of you saw it at Frenzy 7. I saw it in action at a PCA DE this past weekend. It's Tom Falkenberg's latest addition to the fleet, the "Tilos Car" (or as it is now known "Big Bird").

1st edit:
I am unable to respond to posts at work for some reason. I can add new ones or edit old. According to Mark Anderson who has raced against it, I seem to recall he estimated it had to be close to 600HP based on Mark's Dyno numbers. When recently tested, the clutch was slipping, and we had to abort the Dyno.
2nd edit:
As I recall the weight is somewhere around 2700. The reason the clutch was slipping was because the pressure and intermediate plates were rusted (fixed with a "Scotch Brite" pad". The car has changed hands several times recently because the recent POs thought the car was too much for their skills. Not because of any reliability issues. It hasn't seen much action in several years.

It's very...yellow
Sure was easy to spot that bright yellow beast from a distance on the back stretch of VIR this weekend as it blasted by all those "other Porsches" !! :-)
Tom was kicking aXX as he got better and better on Sat as he and "Big Bird" got more and more "aquainted" with each other.
Can't wait to watch Tom and Big Bird in action next season !!
There were approx 6 928s on the track at VIR this weekend, all did GREAT. Gary "Mr. Smooth" Knox and his 88 S4 were very impressive on the track, Brian Daley was also impressive with his stock 79 Euro. It was a sight to see a stock 79 with stock 15" wheels and no spoilers/wings running in the red group and doing great !!
There was also a gentleman from Canada (sorry forgot his name) running an 86 S , he drove 16 hours to run at VIR. As we were talking he asked me what a 928 was like on the street !! Turns out he bought his 86 a few years ago, stripped it, prepped it for the track and has never had it or another 928 on the street, his 928 was bought for track use only !!
There was also a few other 928s there, Jim with his 91GT , and Mark Deltufo is his 89GT, both also very impressive on the track !!
All in all a fun 928 weekend !!

thanks for the pics john!
took a day (and a spin off the track) to get somewhat used to the car.
once we got settled, it really ate up the track. sunday i had a great battle with a cup car and 2 gt-3s. lost the gt-3s in a lap or two. cup car would fall back in the straights and catch up in the transitions.
plan to add a wing/splitter and some more seat time and it should be hard to catch.
it sure was fun passing all those 911/993/996s on the back straight though.

Tom's car is a winner! I rode right seat on Saturday [the second helmet in http://members.rennlist.com/jeifert/BB3.jpg]. We made a few changes over the course of the session, and the lap times improved by around 10 seconds!!!
The car is far more solid and balanced that I expected. It handled the technical sections nicely, has hand-of-god braking, and has bags of brute power. Tom needs to calculate the terminal speed at the end of the VIR back straight, which was awesome! Easily pulled a 996 TT.
The funniest sight I've seen in a while was coming into the back straight and seeing a line of track-prepped cars stick out a passing signal as soon as they saw the yellow peril descending on them. Resistance was futile.
Its a little hard to estimate what the car will do when Tom gets it sorted and refines some shifting and transition techniques. My guess is that this is at least a sub 2:10 car on VIR, and may be closer to 2:low. Impressive!
It will be interesting to see next season, when the Big Bird starts to mix it with the higher run groups. I'm sure its going to surprise a few people.

tony,
as far as i can tell we were at +/- 160 when i lifted throttle on the back straight. might have scared myself if it had a speedo
thanks for the help getting adjusted.

Tom,
Yep, it was certainly quick! Bad luck that the car went back in the box before we had a chance to set up the telemetry - it would have been great to get a video and data record of your first weekend in the Bird.
The ride was a blast, and certainly helped to push me in the 928 direction for next season's track car. Now to find a car. Gary Knox has emailed an intro to several 928 racers on the east coast, so now the search is ON!

unfortunately we did not have time wilst preparing the car to get it on the dyno. had it on at the frenzy but the run was aborted because the operator felt that the clutch was slipping. turned out that since it hadn't been driven in +/- 2 years, some patchy rust had formed on the intermediate and pressure plates. fixed with a scotchbrite.
it will go on the dyno again sometime soon......
i can tell you it will spin the tires in first, second and third without too much trouble. (with a 2.20 rear no less)
