Thanks Alex. After seeing the picture of your car I think you are right on with copper brown metallic. I will go ahead and order the full COA to confirm. This car is indeed a keeper. I got into it cheap but this will be an 18 month project and will take a bunch of money thrown at it before it is of the standard I will be satisfied with. After I get the shifter working right the engine may need to be pulled to fix the oil leaks and I will go through the CIS from the tank to the injectors, then the ignition system end to end, then the brake system and it should be fairly reliable at that point. Then a full repaint to better than original finish and lastly interior. Obviously this project fails on all economic measures but I hate to see cars like this being trashed out. Hard to believe that the factory checked alignment of body panels with a dial gauge before it left the plant and it ended up a cheap used sports car that someone thought they could "restore" with a Maaco paint job and red calipers. I will try to do as much work myself as I am able. When I had my 911 painted I saved some money stripping the interior out and all of the exterior fittings, lights, bumpers etc. and helped with the reassembly so will try to do the same with this car.

I have a painter near Denton who paints aircraft and cars. He has done three Porsches for me, and does very good and relatively cheap jobs if you do the prep for him. All three of my cars have gotten very good reviews. Sadly, he works a weird schedule and takes 7-10 weeks to complete one job. Let me know if you want to chat with him.

Thanks docmirror I will keep that in mind. Probably won't paint until next year.

At first I thought the red twist on wire connector was a splice into the dreaded green wire but it turned out to be just zip tied together. But then searching for the left hand connector I found none but a blob of insulation tape. Underneath the tape it looked like this. At least the wires were soldered before being taped. Have ordered the correct male and female connectors from EagleDay.

Just found 928 Motorsports has the same 2-pin connector kit for $10 less. Hate it when that happens. It would be nice if my misfire issues were purely down to this poor splicing job but I doubt it is that simple!

Hi John, great story and project. I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey... appears you already are!
I understand how you need a new 2-pole AMP plug for the harness side, but I suggest buying a new green wire vs. repairing the old one. Also, as you suspected earlier about old plug wires jumping fire, that is very likely. 928 plug wires typically use a 'wood screw' end type on the distributor side (only), and these are prone to internal corrosion. Can't tell you how many times I find what looks like intact plug wires and watch them fall apart on the coil end.

Jim upon closer inspection the plug wires look to have been replaced fairy recently although they are neither the Beru nor Bosch type rather a domestic silicon variety. Is there anything special about the Beru or Bosch re resistance or will these be fine in the interim? The 14 pin connector looks a little dodgy (missing the top cap and showing some oxidation) so will likely just replace the engine wiring loom and the green wire at that time. Right now I just want it running well enough to get me to the Tag agency so I can get it titled!

Congratulations John! I had contacted the PO multiple times and debated about this car for the longest time with myself, but I didn't have the benefit of going there to look or to drive it home. I am glad that the car will end up with an expert and will receive a proper restoration that it deserves!

Please keep us posted.

Yep, that's the magic right there! The 928 is a GT car, not a sports car. It was designed to cross continental distances at highway speeds and get you there fresh as a daisy. Even though it's fun to go tear-assing around the VA countryside at Frenzy, the real satisfaction of driving my 928 is in the highway miles there and back.

Hi James, we need to convince the Dallas guys to meet for lunch one month rather than breakfast and the Okies can crash their party.
