Default CPS connector broken: Repair or replace?

Hello Gents,

I am knee deep into an intake refresh and preparing to install Porken's S300s chips.

The female connector is broken on the CPS. The sensor appears to be fine, and came right out of the bellhousing. The cable is stiff, but workable.

So, do I repair the female connector or just replace the whole thing?

Thanks for any and all advice,

Seth K. Pyle

If you are in no hurry replacement is no brainer given it is already out.

That being said one of my knock sensors was in a similar state a couple of years ago and I did not have a replacement to hand so I jury rigged a "get me by" repair. Still working today but they were only 10 years old and the motor will still run if the sensor fails albeit with 6 degrees of retarded ignition. Trouble is one has to remove the inlet manifold to do the knock sensors on the S4 and I had only just put the thing back on after my breather mods project when the connector crumbled.

At least I know from ST2 that they are working OK.

Rgds

It came out in one piece! You are so living right Seth.

I had to butcher mine to get it out.

What the others have already stated - Replace it and be done and worry free.

Thanks, guys! New Bosch CPS is on order.

Stan, I definitely ordered a new TPS short harness when I ordered the TPS. I've heard horror stories about it.

FredR, I've heard those S4 knock sensors are nothing but trouble in terms of the connectors being brittle and failing.

928S MN, So far, so good. CPS came out no problem. Short TPS harness is intact and fine. NONE of the injector connectors broke upon removal. Only one of the fuel lines had a tiny crack in it.
Of course all of it is getting replaced. I'd be a fool not too. My luck, I'd put it all back together, then they would all fail.

Seth, make sure that all remnants of the male connector are removed from the female connector before trying to install the new CPS. I used a pick to get all the pieces out.

Good to hear your injector connectors survived. I had to wrap a few of those wires as the insulation was worn in places. Drooling over those new electrical harness' that are available. Just not in the budget this year.

Went with the new Gen III four hole injectors. Got a little better fuel mileage with that change out.

I have little trumpy paws, and was able to swap the rear knock sensor with the intake in place. Not something I recommend, but we were headed on a little tour when Rob's tester pointed to the failed sensor. Very soon after the intake refresh was performed and the rest of the crumbly and deteriorated bits under there were replaced.

Seth, I often make judgement calls based on how much risk there is and how much fun it might be to have to fix something on the side of the road. The CPS isn't a side-of-the-road repair, and it's critical to driving the car. Replace the whole thing unless you are feeling really lucky; the crispy wires aren't going to get any better as years and miles pile on. The next failure will be conductors stressed by the stiff insulation and a little vibration. It's just a matter of time. And miles, like "how many miles to flatbed it home?". Any is too many for me.

928S MN and dr bob: I have no desire to tempt fate. The CPS is being replaced.

Any and all crunchy looking connectors are being replaced. I have ordered various connector kits wholesale from Roger. Even though all 8 injector clips came off fine, the are all being replaced. Just because.

This intake refresh was planned for a later time, but now that the train is rolling, I am doing it once and doing it right.

Also Seth I know you were looking at replacing the Broken Connector that goes to the wiring harness, did you notice that the CPS sensor end of that wire was broken too, allowing moisture into the sensor.

As others here already said, just replace old parts and don't try to scrimp on $ it will only make your ride less dependable in the end and waste your time.

Hello davek9! You are correct. I was considering replacing connector. I ordered both the male connector for the CPS and the female connector for the engine harness. However, I have changed my mind and ordered a new CPS.

I could have fixed the connector, but your point is valid on sensor is old and the cable could now be contaminated. As far as I could tell, the female connector looks fine. However, I will replace it if I see any issue.

Thanks!
