Default Source for used timing gears?

Anyone know where I can get a good set of used timing gears? I'm not averse to having them coated if they have wear marks in the coating but only as a last resort.

Why used? What you gonna use 'em for?

I imagine 928 International has a dumpster full of them.

Hoping to either find a good usable set, or a set that can be recoated.

I've got boxes full of gears. The bad ones I toss. The ones that are just barely through the coating I save for future needs.....and sell to people that want to re-coat them.

$150 each, just like 928 International.

Thanks Greg, good option. Can you recommend a company to do the re-coating?

How can you tell if these gears are 'bad' vs. worn? What coating do you speak of, I am ignorant of this. My gears appeared to be worn, but, I have nothing to establish a comparative baseline.

Contact Colin. On Rennlist as Lizard.

Best solution I've seen.

Once the belt wears through the original coating, the aluminum wears rapidly. Minor wear at the very top of the teeth can be tolerated when re-coating.

If more of the tooth has been exposed and you can see wear on the aluminum anywhere but the very top of the teeth...the gears are trash.

The new gears thst Porsche offers are magnificent parts....they just cost more than some people can relate to.

If you were to draw a Datum line atop the gear teeth assuming it represented new and square teeth, my gear teeth are now concave and fall under this so-called Datum line. Gears toast? Porsche gears you speak of at in the 400-600 dollar range per gear?

For fun, here's a picture of my destroyed gears!

I have a new oil pump gear in hand and a set of new cam gears on the way. Very expensive proposition replacing them with new but the extra $200 (vs buying used and recoating) will save me some hassle and hopefully speed up my timeline.

Now you are being smart!

It's over $200 (more, over recoating a used gear you have to buy) per gear to buy new, but they are extremely nice!

Replace the crankshaft drive gear, too....start with an entire new set of gears. (It will wear the belt and the belt will transfer that wear to the new gears.)

Use a factory (or Gates) belt....forget the aftermarket belts.

I'm a huge fan of the stock tensioner, but some prefer Porken's tensioner. Neither are perfect....there are downsides to both. Pick your poison.

You might do well to contact Colin and ask him what he thinks about your gears as candidates for recoating even if you have purchased a new set of gears.

Whereas the coating is clearly worn they do not look that chronic to me but....?
