Default courtesy light problem.

1984 928S

Okay I did some searching and found a little information that might help but wanted to get some advice first.

1- driver door open, no driver side courtesy light working or red light. Pass, side works, Rear hatch light works

2- Pass door open, same as above.

3- hatch open, same as above.

4- open either door and the trunk release works as it should.

5- with doors opened or closed the courtesy lights can be switched on manually.

So I know the light bulbs work. except the over head, which is removed.
It is not grounding on the driver side door when either of the doors are open when using a test light. but does ground when touching the two post for the manual switch.

So could this be a relay issue or is it more likely a broke wire, corroded ground? where is a good place to look for a possible break in the BRN/WHT wire, or what could be another issue im not thinking of?

Thanks, James

Remove, disassemble and and clean the door pin switches.

Before you take things part, get a can of CRC electrical contact cleaner. Put on the extension tube and S pray into the door switch and work the switch. Try a few times. Usually will work.

Your description suggests both door pin switches are working just fine as the both doors trigger the other courtesy lights and allow the boot release to work. If you can switch on the lights manually then power and ground should be good.

Sounds to me like a problem with the switched ground on the driver's side. Since neither light illuminates and they're chained together it should be somewhere upstream of the courtesy light. You're probably going to have to pull the door card off and test the wires but perhaps check at the connection next to the hinge first.

Bill, I will try that. But I feel the door pins are okay.

Duncan, What you are saying is kinda what I am thinking as well. I was hoping someone had a possible idea where the issue could be. ie. a broke wire and where the likely location would be, in the door, or more likely the chassis side.

Since the other lights come on when the driver's door is open, that tells me that the pin switch works.

My first idea would be the switched ground wire. That's the brown/white one on the light assembly. You can check it by pulling the light out, and seeing if the wire shows continuity to ground when the door is opened.

Typical area that breaks is where it flexes as the door is opened and closed. Within a foot or so of the plastic tube.

Well I got my courtesy light in the driver door working and the little red light in the door going as well. The BRN/WHT wire had pulled out of the connector that attaches to the light. New connector and heat shrink and all is good.

The over head got working as well. Had to bend the little contact piece back into place and it functions the was it should.

As careful as I tried to be I broke a few of the body clips while removing the panel. Got some new ones and got it all back together.

Thank, James

FWIW on the red door edge lamps,
I suggest to put RTV silicone onto the harness where it passes the boot ,
this so water will not run down the wire and fill the back of the lamp holder,
just about every lamp I have fixed has this issue.
Good news you can buy new lamp assemblies,
make sure to get new bulbs as well , they are special . Roger has them
