Default Driving these cars on the road is a public service

I continue to be amazed at the reaction I get. This morning, a guy in a late model AMG of some sort raced to catch me...I thought he was trying to race...I needed to turn and I knew I couldn't beat him anyway...but he just wanted to catch up and give me a thumbs up. Last week in a parking lot, a woman stopped me to ask the year and tell me she had a model of one when she was a kid. Clearly, seeing cars like this out driving around makes people happy. I feel like Santa!

Same here...I love it when total strangers just approach you at the gas station and want to talk about their porsches and share positive comments about mine.

I go to a gas station that has a car wash attached (I can get 93 octane there) and the high school / college kids that work there love it also...goes to show you it's one of those cars that has a look that will always be timeless...

Very true.
There's just something about the car that invokes a warm response from just about every demographic out there.
I don't know, maybe it's the right combination of cool, performance, attitude, and iconic 80's movies.

Just had my weekly "What kind of car is that?" today while pumping gas. It's a great daily driver!

Indeed, my 1985 is my daily driver too. I never mind talking to strangers about my 928.

Had some millennial a week or so ago freak out over the headlights. Went to get gas in the early evening and had the headlights on. Turned off the car and lights. The kid next to me said "where are your lights? They were on as you were driving in". I told him I turned them off. He was like "where did they go?" I popped them back on and he was dumbstruck, said "that is too cool"!

Years ago in my '87, Dallas Raines, the KABC weather guy in Los Angeles came up to me while gassing up in OC, said "that is a very sharp car. Don't see a whole lot of those around..."

Would get the occasional thumb up too.

Trifecta for my 928 yesterday.

Went to get a bagel in morning and was stopped in parking lot asking me what year she was, the great lines, etc.

While standing in line a 944 owner picked me out as a "Porsche Guy", mostly because I had a Porsche shirt on, and commented what a beauty she was.

Later in the day, I went to Lowes and bumped into an M3 owner who stopped me in the parking lot. He was a car guy and I took him on a tour of the resurrection work I've done over the past 6 years. It was awesome talking with someone who appreciated the car.

Same here... "what year is that?" and "that's a Porsche?" "What kind of Porsche is it?" Damn near every time I take her out of the garage... the huge 80's wing is kind of an eye catcher too! The 928 is THE iconic 80's car and I love the **** out of it...

Complete enjoyment out of driving it in all aspects. To see people pull up next to you, so they can gets pics on their phone. Plus the range of people that are attracted to the car, because it is so different from the cars of today. Look the next time your out and about- most the cars have the same common shape from Ford , Chevy even BMW- nobody really stands out anymore (except for a badge) unless you go high end & then they have no curves. Years ago you could always tell a car from miles away BMW, Volvo, VW, Ford, Chevy, Dodge and on & on. Kind of depressing really - all for the sake of aero & fuel efficiency. Spoke from my soap box - Sorry.

Had a great experience at PetSmart over the weekend throwing a couple of big bags of dogfood into the hatchback and a kid stopped and asked me what it was. He had never seen one. The 928 is frequently a good conversation starter (and an imminently practical grocery getter).

What I enjoy most are the reactions of children. They react with glee when they see the headlight go up and down. Occasionally they shout "Looks like a frog!" (I've grown to love and anticipate this reaction)

And after seeing one in the wild, that evening they're on e-bay trolling. God knows that's how I got reeled-in 17 years ago.

+928

I have a friend with a formidable collection of cars, and Porsches. 997 Turbo, 987 Spyder, E34 M540i CDN, E30 M3 2.5, S6 daily driver, etc. And he chooses to drive his 1979 928 more than anything other than his leased S6, and then nearly as much. Says the car is just a total joy in use around Los Angeles...and it's a stick.

Every time I see a 928 around town, it stops me cold. There used to be an older woman in Novato who drove a mint black/black early S with manholes...and she was usually hot-boxing inside the thing. Not sure the interior was minty fresh smelling, but the car sure looked great as it rumbled by.
