Waddya mean no US 930 in 1987????? The 930 was dropped from the US in 1980 and returned, imported by PCNA in 1986. The 930 was here when the record was set.
As further proff the 930 was an official US offering, it is in the same magazine ad as the S4 earlier in this thread.
Scares me when a 928 guy knows more about the 930 than the 930 guys

From the copy in that brochure
"it is the 928s 4 which stands alone as the fastest, most powerful production porsche ever built."
STANDS ALONE
It talks about the weissach axle, the fact that the car is hand built, perfect weight distribution, etc. It is comparing it to the same year 911 turbo. So it is settled folks. The 928 is the king of P-cars and is truly a supercar. I've known that for 20 years but THANKS to Steve J. we've got it straight from the horse's mouth.

Yes Holbert took a few liberties with the term "stock"...... special camshafts , L H computer with an external port for chip changes , mirrors missing , narrow rear rims (better on the salt) a bit low in the front ........and that is just what we KNOW ! I really would like to see the inside of that engine .............to check valve springs , valve sizes , porting , oiling modifications . Just imagine that ....Porsche "cheated " !!

I believe Mark Kibort found 85-86 numbers on them and there are shedding gear teeth which is unusual makes them more suspect as well as what was used for valve springs . IF his car has a 2.20 ring and pinion they may have done the high speed run in 4 th gear with chips to up the redline enough to make that possible maybe 7,500 rpm depending on the diameter of the tires .

the serial numbers are not 85 vintage, they look to be either 87 or GT.
291, 2 , 3, 4. and the (-) numbers are 05, 05, 05, 04. odd ball (-) number is aways the driverside exhaust cam
87 and GT cams have the same 290 series serial numbers, but the (-) numbers are different. aways one cam has a different (-) number.
from the HP curves, the HP doesnt seem to be GT shape, and certainly is S4 like. I would bet they are stock! but then again, who knows until I throw a mic on them.

175 would be top speed at 7500rpm. I seriously dout that is the case, especially the shape of the stock HP curve. (based on 145mph at 6300rpm or so) plus with those skinny and short tires, it would be less speed and more rpms. there is plenty of poop to get 172 on those skinny tires at altitude i would imagine. we dynoed the car without cats but everything else stock at 292hp rear wheel. thats close to 350ish flywheel hp. bone stock, but no cats.
many questions though!!
someday, we will find out the truth

ok I dont know what you guys are talking about for speed's as I have an 86.5 928S and it is completely stock from the looks of it, and I w/ 225/50ZR16 (comp G-force T/A) I have on flat ground in a 4 kmph stretch (entering at around 100kmph) punching the gas gotten the needle to get upto the 270 kmph mark on my speedo and lots of rpms left in 4th gear, it is an auto as well. and the only thing that stopped me was running out of road so in a stock S4 w/ aerodynamic upgrades, no mirrors and such I can definatly believe the record he set. I will be going along that strech of road this weekend and would be more than happy to take a photo w/ my digi cam with my needle that high, I have checked my speedo accuracy with one of the road side radar stations our police set out t both city speeds (50kmph) and hwy (100kmph) and both are accurate. I have since however changed the back tires out and they are at 225/55ZR16, so they are slightly bigger than the one I had the speedo checked at meaning I would be going faster than recorded.
and if there are cops on this board I refuse to tell you where that road is, and the radar detector will be on.
Edit: this is on 91 octane at roughly 2100 feet above sea level

I think the record is because the asskickin' 928 engine that shot this shark faster than any that day. I doubt some twists and tweaks pushed it into the record books and did it off shear power and design.
But what the hell do I know? I'm just a computer nerd and wannabe Porsche mech.
