They all drive 911's and were quick to point out that there was a much quicker Porsche from the same era - the 911 Turbo (930) that wasn't exported to the US at the time the record was set, but it was available elsewhere in the world. They say if the 930 were available in the US at the time, it would've been the record holder instead of the 928.

What's your take on this? I know it's trivial, but I need some ammo for a comeback.

Im not sure of the exact title of the record, im sure Mark will chime in but wasnt it for a US legal production car. Make the 930 live under the same rules and it may not be faster?? Dunno

Anyway...those 911 guys, I tell ya, anything to take the wind out of our 928 sails!

Here is the subject discussed from the Porsche 1987 Product Manual.

in 1987, the 928S4 brings the acceleration close to that 911T, but the 928 top speed substantially exceeds that of the 911T.

Sterling - I have the brochure, eight pages. It also states, "We don't intend to make them any faster". It says the 928S4 takes nearly three weeks to complete the assembly process. (A new Mustang rolls off the assembly line every 90 seconds...)

the very poor body design of the early 911 , very high drag and lift , plus no room for wide tires . The add on flares , spoilers while eliminating lift did so at the expense of drag . Nearly everything that "looks" racy and fast actually creates drag !! Porsche designed the 928 with "extra" room for it to grow into wider wheels with no need for flairs .

Any some people say the 928 isn't a supercar!!! I don't see a lambo or Ferrari. I see a 928 Supercar plain and simple.

Back when Motor Trend did a top speed comparison of the 928S4 against a few other cars, the Lamborghini Countach had a top speed that was almost 7mph slower than the S4.

get my new video CD running mid pack against Porsche Factory 996GT3 cup cars, and decide for yourself. at 400hp with a set of headers, and only sweat work to get it down to 2700lbs, how can any car except a Viper compete!!?? (and by the way, 18 years older!!!)

Never see a Pontiac commercial " Wider is better" !!!! stock 928 rear wheels are 77" apart . fronts are 73" and 100" wheel base.
Stock coil overs allow you to slam the car down to 112 mm front and 130mm rear ride hight, and all with a 52/48 weight distribution.

without getting too sentimental about models, the 928 just has more of what you want in a race car, or race car conversion. In stock form, it is not much heavier than a 911 turbo (3500vs 3300) and power ranges from 300 to 450 vs the 928 stock power of 320 to 350 listed flywheel hp. Ill sacrafice that extra power for the comfort of the porsche stationwagon! in race form, put 1/2 the money in the 928 and you will be equally as fast, put the same and you will be much faster.

Notice there are no side mirrors on the Holbert car during the run. But on the land speed record video as Al pulls up and rolls down the window to give his impressions of the run, the mirrors have magically re-appeared!

The 911 people are just jealous their expensive beloved Porsche lost to our watercooled V-8. I'll bet it was some lawyer owned 911 that said it would have won 'if' and tried to win over a technicality == a sore loser.

How can a shark beat a lamborghini in a pedal to the metal test and not be a supercar? A supercar 'lamborghini' gets beat by a non supercar? The 928 is the long lost underappriecated supercar and I'm proud to have 1.

I'm a 911 people ;-) I'm also a 944 people and a 928 people. And maybe a 968 and 914 people too. So there. 930 - imported or not - lower top speed than a 928S4. The article above compares the 1979 928S with a 930 - hardly a fair comparison since the land speed record was later set by an S4.

Answer to the age-old question remains the same: they are 100% different animals. You should own both.
