U.S. Ownership History
Good day fellow forum member's
I have recently acquired an 82 928. Picture's attached. It was a spur of the moment thing as in I've always wanted one and having just built a new home with a 6 car garage I needed to rebuild the car stock, Sold my 2006 987 to help fund the build. I am a hobby wrench so I'm in and not leaving this group....too late to turn back.
As I get into the car and start the complete refresh I can't help but think the low mileage on the cluster is legit(it works). I do have all supporting documentation from when the car came to Canada in 2002 but am looking to find the US history. I have pulled a Carfax and it only gives me everything from when the car came to Canada.
I could try Autocheck but another $30.00 bucks for probably the same information. Anybody have any thoughts?

Nothing to add about the Carfax, but welcome to the forum! Your car looks great. I don't live too far away from you--in fact one of the guys in my office is from Sunderland.

I knew my rambling this morning would attract attention. Thank you for pointing out my extremely poor punctuation skills. I'm trying my best.....
The car has just over 19000 miles. Paperwork shows it was imported to Canada with 8800 miles. I didn't pay much attention to it as the car seemed reasonably clean and the deal was right.

Anyway congrats on your purchase! Got any interior pics?!
As for mileage, good luck. I had an Autocheck on my car and it only had one reported mileage way back at 11,000 miles. Do you have any paperwork from the previous owners or shops that performed maintenance? If so I suggest getting in contact with them to see if they have any personal or business records.

Congrats neighbour looks like a nice find! I'm just a bit west toward Mt Albert. Seems you're already addicted with a parts car too. Great to know more 928 wrenches in the area

Yes the GT6 is pretty cool. Unfortunately I am developing a knack for the perpetual project cars. I hear cars are fun to actually drive. I'll have to try that some day.

That car looks to be in nice condition. Congrats and welcome to the tank. And red is my favorite color! (altho I have yet to own a red one)
You're best bet (nod to Randy) is to go ahead and get the car history report. Not the most accurate things, in fact more of a marketing document than anything else, but it can show you where the car has been. With an 82 however, that pre-dates these car history reports and they will be of limited value. Nate's (GT6ixer) advice is best - see if you can trace it back through the shops that worked on it if you have old receipts.

One other observation (well, maybe more than one) - While the seats look good and judging by the pleats, not heavily used, which supports low mileage, other things do not support low mileage. For instance, I do not see much of the gold colored zinc plating in the engine bay, which typically means lots of heat cycles - that wears off the plating from the various bits and pieces, like the intake clamps. Also, it appears to have a dash cap/cover, which is prone to warping, and the pod cap too, both indicating a higher mile car. On the other side supporting low miles, the rear quarter interior panel in the photo does not look warped, the carpet appears very nice from what one can tell in a photo, and the cross member in the engine bay is not all chipped up, which is a hall mark of high mileage cars.
Anyway, the key is to get the maintanence up to date and drive it regularly - it is a very nice car and color combo.
As a bonus - it looks like you have the original, early hood shocks, with the steel shafts. So long as they are still nice and stiff, keep them in.

Yeah she is a mystery.....I'm working away on getting all maintenance up to date and she will be on the road come spring time.
Thanks to this site and the detailed write ups I've already got the wheel bearings on the go, fuel injectors and fuel lines out, and complete ce panel refresh and grounds completed. Surprised that everything electrical works perfectly after that.

You never know how its gonna go until I put some time behind the wheel. Seems good so far. Figure the refresh will cost me roughly 2 times what I paid.
