Default Hella H4 - questions

All -

Are the Hella H4 lamps "universal"? So if I find an 8" unit for another car will it fit the 928?

If not universal is there any way of knowing a cross reference of what would work?

Thanks -

In 8" - unless you want to do a lot of fabricating - the only thing that will fit easily is the custom designed 928 version from Bosch (LHD & RHD versions & DOT LHD in USA) - I've never heard of folks doing/documenting any other 8" conversions nor have I heard of Hella 8" lenses installed on a 928 (in stock locations).

In 7" sizes (with trim rings) you can much more easily adapt other lenses to fit - if you already have the carrier - e.g. for sealed beam (crappy) DOT lens/reflectors. You can certainly use 7" lamps (lens / reflector / bulb holder) from Bosch, Hella, Cibie & Marchal - likely many others too - but these are the obvious premium brands.

Go with the 7" units. They have twice the output of the sealed beam units and are only around $100/kit

I use 8" H4's with 55/100 bulbs which will light up the world on high beam.
The H5's are crap, H4's are available new but the are not cheap. I think they average around $350 each. Plenty of used ones around, i even think Mark Anderson has a few.
You can also use the 7in H4's with the brighter bulbs. As I understand it the earlier 8" H4's did not have the bump or the indicator on the top.

Are the reflectors in H5s the same as H4s?
I have some H4s that have bad reflectors and wondered if I could save them with some old H5 reflectors.

The reflectors are not the same - partly because of the very different bulbholders. Using the H5 reflector & 9004 bulbs instead is not a good solution - because the filament position & orientation is different. I think is is unliikely such a hybrid combination would give you anything worth using...
