On the bright side it wasn't the 87 which is still original paint. The 80 was repainted about 10 years ago, should be much easier to match / blend compared Diamond Blue Metallic.
Funny how things work out, I damaged a tire on the 87 last weekend (not a big deal, due to be replaced next spring anyway). Had that not happened we probably would have been driving the S4....

Anywho - determined to still drive the car for our 11th Wedding Anniversary Road Trip Weekend Extravaganza. I remembered Shane Elliot left behind the flag mirrors from his 86.5 Murf928 Supercharged project car back in 2008 (he installed aero mirrors).

OMG...nope, nope, nope..... Yeas ago there was a herd of deer living around Austin Straubel Airport in GB (not a small airport, four major airlines use it). They authorized bringing in sharp shooters to take out the herd, which lead to animal rights protests outside the airport....yea, let's see what happens when a 737 plows into a couple deer.

That is one of the main reasons that kept me from ever getting serious about riding a motorcycle.

When I got home last night I stood there looking at the damage and the Replica Cobra sitting next to it, and thanked my lucky stars we were not driving that.

What's up with the waves in that rear bumper cover?

At least it wasn't a moose. The damage doesn't look too bad.

Today was the Holiday party at Zero to 60 Garage. This is the place where my friend David C Treichel will be repairing the damage done to Tawny (what Lorelei named the 80).

I think she will have good company...

Thanks for blowing up that photo, Dan. I could see he was holding up a sign...but just couldn't make out what it said.

Brian.

Of all my 928's this is the only one that didn't need any paint work...... oh well, such is life.

I managed to remove all the metal trim without damaging anything.

Ready for the body shop....

One thing to note, all the care and effort to "save" the 1/4 window seal was for nothing. By the time I got it out it was apparent keeping a 40 year old seal is stupid so I'll be replacing it anyway.

I cannot recall how many hours it took to clean out the 1/4 window channel. Copious use of a heat gun, acetone, plastic scrape tools and many, many rags later...... all the caked on residue from the old rubber seal is gone.

I'm now tempted to pop out the other window just to clean it up and replace the seal.

G'day, great pics, thanks for the update, I notice that your inner R/R panel covering is coming adrift in much the same way as mine, are you going to address this whilst you have her apart, if so, I would be interested to see your repair process (a new thread perhaps?).

Look forward to the next photo update.

You know if you don't you'll always be thinking about the gunk in there, until the end of time.

Hacker, stupid question: I thought the quarter window seals were NLA?

Same stage of prep for mine too! I carefully removed the quarter windows and seals, planning to reuse them due to NLA(?). Will use Sika urethane window sealant for the seal to the body, similar to the hardened stuff I scraped out.

That is the plan since having the window out gives really good access. I'm going to try and locally stretch / glue / clamp since the missing window makes this possible.

You may also notice a faint square outline on that panel in an overhead shot....yea...that is what happens when you set an acetone soaked sponge on leather.

Replacement dash / center console is being planned, still not sure what direction I'm taking this car. Probably just original brown color but with tan stitching.

The pod on this car is perfect, so that will move to the 87 and I need to decide on something for this car. Debating on a tan pod with the two tone dash since I'm not a fan of all that contrasting stitching on the pod and I want to do "something" different.

Maybe alligator.....

Nope, per Roger the part was recently updated in the database too. Every post I found on the topic spoke about saving the seal due to being expensive. Granted it isn't cheap, but $200 or so isn't a lot to get me to re-use a rubber seal.

Same for the window squeegee, there was no saving it.

My State Farm rep spelled out such incidentals could be added to the quote so I need to submit that form once all the parts are figured out.

I'll report back once my body guy shows me how he would do it. He does world class restorations and I'm lucky he's able to squeeze this in right now.

So what method did you end up using to get the old rubber out of the groove?

Good to know the seals aren't NLA. Thanks!
