Smile Fuel Pump Query 928S2 Euro

Hi all,

I have a probably stupid question for the forum experts
I have a 1985 S2 Euro (4.7) which is in the process of a major restoration (everything rusts in the U.K.!!)

Yesterday the fuel pump failed (believe it's part number 928.608.104.02 unless someone here corrects me) and I'm struggling to get a replacement that's not supremely expensive.

I spotted a later S4 pump (928.608.104.03) available for approximately 60% less ( still new, still genuine Bosch) so (here comes the stupid question -have you guessed yet?) - is there any reason I can't fit the later S4 pump to the S2?

From what I can find they are the same physical size but the later pump delivers slightly higher lpm rate than the S2 - is this a major problem? Won't it just circulate back to the tank with the return?

I don't need 100% originality and may try some tuning in the future so surely higher fuel delivery would be a benefit??

I may well be missing something plainly obvious but hopefully you guys will be able to put me right

Thanks in anticipation of your responses

Stewart

I believe the correct pump for your car is 928-608-104-01

Thanks Mark,
However it was Porsche UK that told me it was 02 based on chassis number
The 01 pumps are also significantly less expensive here than the 02's

Take off your pump and check its OEM Bosch number to be absolutely sure you are getting the correct part if you are sure the pump is original.

Otherwise compare the pump specs and get the one you like more as the EFI in 928s isn't as finicky as the CIS. Just make sure it is genuine Bosch and not a cheap knock off part.

Mark is of course correct - pump for S2 cars is 928 608 104 01 - 84 to 86 M28.21/M28.22 engines.
928 608 104 02 was used on M28.11/M28.12 up to 83.

I bow to your expertise
It's just strange a Porsche franchised dealer gave me the wrong part number.

Nevertheless can the S4 pump be used? That was the original question

Most Porsche dealer here and in the UK would not know a 928 if it bit them in the A**.

You should be OK with an S4 pump. Make sure the screen filter in the tank is in good condition.

EXACTLY Roger and that's why I came here - to the people I trust, to the people with the experience sometimes so sadly lacking this side of the pond, there are UK experts this side & they are worth their weight in gold (jds I'm thinking of you)

Out of curiosity would you have the correct Bosch number for my cars pump? I might be better tracking it down that way rather the Porsche number I have been mis-quoted.

Thanks again for the Boards help, I feel a solution coming :-)

External Fuel Pump 84 to 86 16v 928 608 104 01 0580464017 Bosch 61 471
External Fuel Pump 87 to 88 928 608 104 02 0580464045 Bosch 69 473

Old and new Bosch numbers - Euro Car Parts are usually very good

Roger,

When I called about a pump today I was told the Bosch pump ending 045 has now been supersceded by one ending 057. Does that sound right to you or am I being fed yet another line?

Stewart,
057 is used on the 89 to 95 cars with the addition of the intank fuel pump so not a good match for your car.
Stick with 0580464045.

Thanks Roger
I thought it sounded iffy
Really struggling to comprehend the level of misinformation I'm getting in the UK for this

Hi Roger,

I took your advice and went to Euro Car Parts and ordered the replacement pump from them entering my Reg No into their Website to be sure to get the right part.

Low and behold it arrived today and it was a different Bosch Number - They supplied Part no 0 580 254 053 (and it says "Audi" on the box!)

Armed with the information kindly supplied by you i said this isn't right, im told i need 0 580 464 017 as per your email. After a lot of humming and Hahing some "cross referencing" (why i dont know - i gave them the number) they tell me they can get it i e the correct bosch number supplied by you & it will be here Saturday.

Not only will it be here Saturday but that model is £40 cheaper than the one they supplied - a third of the cost less.

I just wanted to say thank you kindly, without your, and Marks help and assistance, i wouldnt have had the information to know they were supplying me with the wrong pump - Well done to you both!

FWIW my CIS car ran fine for many years with an S4 pump fitted - met the pressure (75psi) and delivery rate specs for CIS. My rule of thumb is that any EFI pump that will physically fit the installation site will do the job, at least temporarily.
