Default Hi ! Has anyone shipped a complete manual transmission "cross-country" lately ?

Hi !

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any hints or info will be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to get a good estimate on shipping costs for a manual transmission all the way from the rural under-developed state of California to the
over-developed, highly-advanced metropolitan mecca of Kentucky

Has anyone shipped a transmission lately? Costs? Advice? Preferred carriers?
Thanks !

I have used TST Overland to ship an auto box from one side of Canada to the other. Cost was $200 and I built a custom crate for the trany. Probably $100 in wood as I over built it a bit.

I've heard that a dry transmission inside an igloo cooler may just be under the FedEx or ups 150 lb limit? Did a search in rennlist months ago when I was contemplating sending greg brown my '78 manual to him.

This was Greg Browns suggestion when I was talking to him about shipping mine to him for a rebuild. Get one of the 150 quart coolers, can ship up to 150 lbs via FedEx ground. I got mine off Amazon for around $65.

Sign up with UNISHIPPERS. It will cost you around $100 for LTL truck freight. Maybe even less if you can get the seller to drop it off at the depot and you can pick it up from your local depot. I've used them several times and the cost is always ridiculously low. I shipped a full size pallet containing a bolt-in roll cage from Chicago to California for $90 just a few weeks back. A 6 foot by 3.5 foot by 2 foot wide box filled with a front bumper, fender, and headlights for a Cayman to Florida and it was only $115. Call them. You won't be disappointed.

This is very encouraging. Thank you all so much for the advice.
And the cooler idea. Brilliant.

I was not smart enough to use a cooler for packaging but I was able to get a drained manual transmission boxed up and shipped through FedEx ground under the 150 pd limit. I shipped from Chattanooga TN to somewhere way out west for $160. Wyoming or MT or someplace out there.

If your work does shipping and has a freight account, and you can ship to another place with a freight account (or the freight terminal) it gets WAY cheaper.

I shipped a 944 shortblock (250-300lbs probably) on a 48x40 pallet from Cincinnati to west LA for ~$160 a few months ago, via Fedex Freight on an account with dock/forklift access.

I used DHL and they had some pretty good rates. i think it was $250 to ship mine
engine short block was a little more (like $400)
