after many happy miles of SE motoring its time to sort the last of the minor issues out, fit new exhaust front pipe- outer skin starting to come off and it rattles inside on tick over and clutch is getting very stiff and creaks when pressed slowly.
also need to remove intake to sort an oil leak, but when thats all done the old girl should be all finished.
not a fffffflex plate in sight

first start up since september last year, about 3 seconds of cranking and just started and ticks over nicely, so finally taking a week off from the day job and getting the old girl one step closer to being finished.
need to remove intake and replace all 30yr old rubber and plastic, and sort the oil leak.
then replace clutch and flywheel, drill out the broken mount for the engine speed sensor and replace exhaust front pipe, the rattle from inside it is getting bad and a 12k service
i hate oil leaks.
will post a few pictures as i go as i know everybody likes looking at pictures.
cheers
Phil

just removed the exhaust front pipe, and before i throw it in the skip can anybody just confirm that is what a standard 87,88,89 S4 exhaust front silencer looks like inside? and this is not an SE specific part.
pictures taken with exhaust removed and looking back up inside the front pipe i cannot see what is rattling but it sounds like a weld has broken off inside somewhere.

cheers

some of the things that are sent to try us when doing an intake and clutch overhaul, at least i am pretty sure i have found the cause of the oil leak, now just cleaning the V and intake manifold itself.
cheers.
part number is from the exhaust front pipe, is it just a std S4 version?
and i did not snap the speed sensor bolt, thats how its been since i bought it, all now sorted, one less job on the list to do
if only people would have used a torque wrench on the clutch bolts and looked at one of the best threads on rennlist -Comprehensive S4+ bolt lengths and torque values spreadsheet, thanks Rob
cheers
Phil

Hi PHil,

Yes, the first big muffler (for a car without cat) is the same as a regular S4.
Thank you for confirming the reference.

Only the two intermediate mufflers and the final one are specific, even if they were reused for the GT, with different references.

sorry for the delay and thanks for confirming Samuel
the old girl is now back on the road where all 928's belong.
now just needs some new red bogie shocks, the A/C to be reinstated and the period radio and amp to be fitted and this SE will be 100% finished.
that is for next year but as i say i am now enjoying driving it on the open road
the only things on it that are not genuine are the Greg Brown fuel hoses, silicon sump gasket, Porkensioner and Rogers engine mounts, the rest is all as Porsche intended
cheers

Glad to know that you enjoy this car on the road, at least!

I have driven two different 928 CS yesterday and I'm really forward to driving my current one also
Mine needs a lot of work but these cars are great when in good condition and properly used.

so another year of happy motoring in the old SE, carried out a 12 month service and lots of happy miles of motoring
when i rebuilt the interior i used some good second hand none leather rear quarter pannels as the leather had shrunk on the originals and warped the actual trim, and i am finally getting round to removing the leather and getting the trim back into shape by using water to soften it and clamping plates in place to hold it where it should be.
i think there will be enough leather wraped over the inside of the trim to still work, pictures of how it is going are to follow.

just interesting to see that the hardboard trim is original and is dated 88 on the inside but as can be seen the actual stitched leather was from an S2- with the perforated speaker part having just been cut away and the S4 speaker trim fitted.
they must have had a lot of S2 leather trim pre made if they were still using it in 88, or maybe not may S2's had full leather interiors.

I have been saying it since i got it on the road, but the A/C IS getting fitted next year- compressor is away getting sorted + new condensor and dryer etc, new sensors pictured.
and as its getting a cambelt next year, an ideal time to do it all together + engine out to do the head gaskets nothing showing signs of failure yet but they don't last forever.

Also gives me a year to sort the rear quarter trims out so i can do the rear shocks at the same time and the front shocks when the engine is out.

but as for this year am just doing as many miles as possible as it is just a fatastic driving machine.

cheers
Phil

Phil - that leather probably isn't from an S2. I have an S4 with the perforated front panels on the door from factory i.e. it didn't have the hifi speaker option and only has 2 front speakers and 2 rear.

Thanks Hilton i did not know that
pictures are of how i got the quarter pannels straighter, using water to soften the board i then clamped plates either side of the board and left over night, which worked but when trying to refit the leather the board would slightly bend back.
so i had to secure the plates in place with rivets to keep it straight,.
when they are secured they compress the foam and are thus at the same height as the foam so do not show through the leather
the slight crease next to the edge shows by how much the leather has shrunk by, as thats where it used to fold around.

at least porsche folded enough over to be able to do this.

looks a lot better now than it did.
i could have got it recovered to make it look like new but this project is all about a sympathetic restoration, just making it look like a well cared for 150k mile 31yr old 928 and not like new.
and i like the fact its the original leather that was on the car when it was new - it can only be original once.

now just needs cleaning and treating

cheers
Phil

Cool

way back when i was putting the interior back in after its respray i knew i would be putting an original radio amp back into it, so i just left all the speaker wires to terminate under the side trim where the amp should go and just joined twin core wire from there to the radio so i had a functioning radio, the power wires for amp etc were there but had their connectors cut off at some point before i got the car.

the main problem i was having was finding a radio with an 8 pin din out so as to connect to the amp, but then i saw on the blaupunkt radio thread you could get an 8pin din to 4RCA connector and it all fell into place.
so for the last few weeks i have been sourcing the parts i would need, having a spare wiring loom helps on the connector side of things and the suppressor/choke and amp from ebay.

i tried to get the wiring to look factory, with plastic sheathing from the spare loom and factory looking tape to cover the heatshrink joins for the connectors, and it just amazes me you can still buythe amp mounting brackets from porsche.
had to be carefull with the hot air gun as not to melt the carpet, but lots of cardboard around the heatshrink when i was heating it did the trick.
and along with fitting the blaupunkt period looking radio it now sounds quite good.

and if it looks a bit odd its a RHD 928

so another job ticked off the to do list.

cheers
Phil
