Anyone out there have an H4 lens? The lights all work in the red car but the lens on the left side blew out but the fixture itself is Ok and works

Roger started a project to have the lenses replicated in plastic but I don't think it finalized.
Finding an entire used assembly will be easier than hunting for the lens as nobody separates the two unfortunately.

I have an older 8" H4 which I knocked the internal shield loose. It does not have the H5 style blip on top.

The Ultimate Replacement Lens would be a good H4 lens and bulb combo that would fit the H5 assembly, giving the better focus and hard H4 cutoff. Would be a pretty decent-sized market if one had a workable product.

Alan, they are indeed different. I'd think it would be more important for the cup and reflector to be at the correct positioning for the bulb type. The filament on an H5 and H4 are pretty different... almost by 2cm, actually. I'm not sure how this translates beaming the light back onto the reflector and out the lens. Could be a big difference, could be un-noticable. As Carl (928 MS) showed in another thread, putting a poorly-designed "9004 LED" (which was NOT a 9004 besides the connector pigtail) into an H5 lens assembly still resulted in decent light throw and an improvement over stock. Only way to really know is to compare a true H4 setup and H4 lens on an H5 reflector. Regardless, I wouldn't modify an H5 reflector to accept an H4 bulb, as you'd also want to modify the cup.

This may end up being a trial-and-error, or try-and-cry effort, using other bulbs that share the 9004 base but have the filament placement different. IIRC, K's 4Runner uses a 9007 bulb which shares base with 9004, but also has a H4-like hard-cutoff beam pattern in her car.
My Honda DD has a sucky blob US DOT beam pattern, even though the low- and high-beams are completely separate bulbs/reflectors/lenses. Missed opportunity! Remedy on that car is HID projectors. I wonder if a 8" pie tin, silvered for appearance only, would be a decent trim for some projectors mounted in the 8" 928 housing? Then a plain acrylic flat-faced non-refractive "lens" could cover the pie plate and the projector. Maybe add CFL or LED halo-eyes, if it's not too over-the-top.

Our plan is to replace the bulb with an LED 9004 fitment from one of the many suppliers.
From what we have seen the reflector is very near similar to the H4 reflector. We did not measure it to the extreme however.
We have a lens and a bulb - so that leaves the reflector. The goal is to provide a cost effective alternative to changing out the complete H5 light for an expensive H4.
Having the H4 lens also allows replacement of a broken lens in an original H4.
Once we have the trial completed we will then compare performance. As long as there is a marked improvement over the dismal performance of the H5 we will have a cost effective product.
The other bonus is the lens is not made of glass and lest prone to cracking/smashing.

I don't suppose this will fit in one of the older sealed beam housings? One would have to upgrade to an H5 first?
