Unhappy Rearview Mirror Fell Off

Can anyone recommend a procedure and proper adhesive for re-attaching the rearview mirror to the windshield? Thanks...

Get a $2 glue kit at any auto parts store ...follow directions do not use too much glue . put a piece of tape on the outside of the windshield to help you locate the center . Hold it straight and level when you glue the shoe to the inside ....be sure the shoe is upright so the mirror sides down onto it . slide on the mirror after the recommended cure time .

Mine fell off in August while washing my windshield for a track event, 10 minutes before the event. I ran anyway, loved the added view and I have yet to re-attach it!

Jim,
I tried the local parts store rearview glue on 1 of my cars 2 summers ago. It fell off 2 more times. I prepped it properly each time. I ended up going to a local windshield shop and they did it for free and it hasn't fallen off since. I mentioned my 3 attempts and he said he gets a lot of people with the same problem. He says the parts store glue isn't really that great when the temp in the car gets hot.

I think I've read a post or two about people putting too much pressure on the windsheild from the inside and cracking the windshield. You may want to do some checking of old posts or the Nichols site.

Hello Steve J.

I may get some flack for this, but what the heck. I had my mirror fall of an 85 S that I had a few years ago, just as you have experienced. When I went to replace the mirror I realized that the unit was really late 70's crap.

I went to a local wrecker and got a real nice GM mirror with independent lap lights at the bottom of the unit actuated by their own little switches. It came off a late 80's early 90's GM 2 door (Alero or something like that??). It was like new, and $20. I think it was also the same unit that came on that years Vette.

I got the piece that is glued on the window from a GM dealer for under $5, and like tresamore wrote, a glass shop glued it in for free.

It was fab! I just wired the little lights up to the 928's over head light for independent power. I was sure to grab the small 3-wire harness for the mirror (5-6 inch) and the little black cover for the wires so that they are hidden. The mirrors lights also were positioned just over my lap, so they perfectly illuminated anything I had in my hands, but the actual bulbs were never visible (no glare).

It was such a nice set up, and looked absolutely stock. When sold my S and purchased my current S4, one of the first things I did was have my mirror mounting stud removed, and a GM one glued in. I then got another neat little $20 GM lighted mirror.

There are nicer custom mirrors available with all sorts of stuff in them, but for $20 bucks you can't go wrong.

IMHO

I used one of the little kits to reglue the mirror about 6 months ago. So far it is still there. I like the GM Mirror idea, wish I'd heard of it before I glued the mirror back on :-).

To get the shoe off the mirror, I used a screwdriver to lever it out. It is a friction fit (on my 80 anyway) but it was in there pretty tight.

I got a mailer from a company called Mito Corp that sells some interesting rearview lights... Kind of expensive, but one is 'auto dimming' and the other has 'homelink'.

Similar mirrors to this on eBay all the time for a fraction of the price!

I've used the Wall-Mart product on several vehicals several times. Course, I really over did it on the preping, the cureing and such.

Unless I break it off, they have never fallen off. (I've broken it off multipule times, dang forehead.)

Usualy it's at least 2 years before I break it off.

Hum, and it's not like we don't get loughts of heat in Houston, or anything.
