Alrighty then, lets start putting some numbers together. I'm envisioning a process where a customer sends the failed WP in, the shaft, cart/seal, and impeller are replaced with a press, clean up, then off it goes back to the customer.

Roger has a resale number, so lets see what 50 sets cost? Labor looks like press off drive hub, pull cart out the back, press off impeller, then reverse. We may need to make a thin press clamp to get behind the impeller. I don't know which side the cart comes out.

This isn't rocket surgery, and we are paying a rebuider for junk work, so lets stop doing that.

Good part is that all you need to "re-machine" the mounting face is a large belt sander....makes it look nice.

I'd be highly interested to see how improved rebuilds would compete pricewise against a brand new pump. Clearly, no new material is sourced other than the necessary components such as bearings and a new plastic impeller.

I find it rather ridiculous that other car forums have minimal complaints about rebuilds, yet a Porsche 928 pump that is rebuilt is like catching ebola.

You are starting to sound like Kibort in the intake manifold thread!

Not a chance in hell of me rebuilding these things. Too much liability.

That's what I just did. Since I just got a 32V and want to stick with a stock tensioner, Ed's pump seemed like a no-brainer to me. Porsche sells their pumps for crazy money, Geba pumps have a metal impeller, and Laso doesn't make their pumps anymore. Ed's pump costs about the same as a Laso did and his pump has a few extra safety features, so for me it came down to Porsche or Ed, and it was an easy choice in my mind. I should be installing it next weekend.

Here's one from an '89 I pulled today. Constantly amazed at what I find in these cars.

I've had one of Ed's Guardian pumps on my car for about 4 years. NO PROBLIMS!! His pump is the best out there hands down!

Some of the prices for parts on these cars is absurd. Porsche water pumps being one of them.

Buy Ed's pump for less money, and a far better product IMHO!!!

I suppose you could call his pump a rebuild, but it's better than a stock pump, and it's his design.

+1 for Ed's Guardian pump.

I have one on my GTS. I will have one next time on my 89.

Someone took a hammer and a chisel and tried to stake the impeller in place.

Sean, is that the metal impeller that everyone is afraid of? I pulled a rebuilt from 2002 on my 85 and it had the plastic impeller. Still in great shape.
