I am going there after work today to pick up my splash shields. I will talk to them directly. If the parts guy doesn't know who does it, I will ask the 'sup for supplier info.

Ask him where my oil pressure sender boots are. They only sent me 3 of the 10 I ordered and I have been waiting for 2 weeks. You'd think for $18.95 shipping they would have sent them in one package. That's what I get for trying to save a buck or two. Roger could have had them to me in 2 days. That experiment was a failure.

I think somebody made a mistake on the internets.
That's listed as a waterpump that fits '84 and '87-89 928s, '84-90 944's, and '87-88 924s. For $117. But it carries a factory warranty, so what the heck-- give it a try

(Sunset lists that same part# as a discontinued valve spring with the same model/year application).

Got the invoice emailed to me today. Some outfit in Reseda Ca called European Auto Service did the work, charged 5 hours of labor (LMAO) and the price of this water pump was $170.00. Conti belt was $107.00. The invoice is hand written and almost no way to read anything on it. The tensioner was not rebuilt but they were nice enough to replace the rollers.

So the pump remains a mystery. I'll add it to the collection of discussion pieces taking up shelf space around here.

No luck with the Porsche dealer yesterday. The new parts guys don't know where any of the rebuilds come from. Although he did say if a PORSCHE rebuilt pump fails, they are on the hook for any damage. How much liability? Well I bet it stops right after you install it yourself in the car.

Indeed. I once had someone for whom I was doing some diagnostics tell me that he had a local shop that told him they'd do his timing belt for $400. I told him that the book time was over 8 hours. He seemed unconcerned by that. So, I told him to go ahead...

Consistent with a rebuilt pump price in that era.
Another thing I just love. Last weekend I was doing a review of service records for someone looking at a 928 to buy. One record had a line item "diagnose 'rough running' 65 hours."

That's it. No detail other than that for that line item. (There were many other unrelated line items. It was a big bill.)

Yea, same here. Customer didn't want to wait 3 weeks for me to get to his car and didn't like my price quote on a belt/pump. Took it to another shop that quoted 50% less. That shop had not a clue. Kept calling Roger for assistance and the owner was sending me pictures and text messages through the entire ordeal. 4 weeks later I said I'm out of this, not my problem. Asked him if it was worth saving that amount of money and not having his daily driver for a month when I could have had it done in 2 days.

65 hours and no details? Geezus. Bet that car got sold quickly after. I don't know how some people in this business can sleep at night.

Had a buddy looking at this pump and he found a rebuilt Laso on the Google with the exact impeller so that may be it.

My local shop is like you. A TB/WP job is typically a 4-5 page itemized invoice. I give him **** over it but at the end of the day his customer know exactly what they got and what they paid for.
I'm like: "Do they really need to know just how many o-rings and cans of brake cleaner you used??". At one point I suggested he count sheets of paper towel and put that on the receipt.

It's exactly how I do it too. I'll list everything used. Sometimes I'll combine, say, tensioner rebuild on to one line item for space but will list them all on that line with a combined total. I'd rather give the customer a detailed report on what's been done and charged then have what we've been describing above. Hell, I usually send out daily emails with updates to the customer who's car I'm working on. Some people don't care, some people think it's great.

I love it. Years ago I took a used car to a body shop for repairs. When I picked it up I got the repair order. Hand written across the invoice was "FIX CAR." That was all is said. No more. Why bother to itemized anything? The same attention to detail when fixing the car was given to doing the bill. So when I went to sell the car I showed the prospective buyers the bill. There, everything was fixed. There was no doubt the transmission was rebuilt and it got new wiper blades along with the new paint job. Surely they ground the crankshaft when they were installing new license plate bulbs. It is all there on the repair order. The car was fixed. It says so right there.

I couldn't make this stuff up.
