Default Limited slip interchageability

Years ago, a friend of mine bought a limited slip differential from 928 Int'l to install in his '85.

He ended up selling his car without installing the limited slip. I bought the limited slip from him a couple of years ago with the intention of installing it in my '82 ('89 already has LSD).

I'm not sure what year the LSD came out of, but I assume that 928 Int'l would have sold him the correct LSD for his '85. So the question is: will a LSD that would work in an '85 work in an '82?

Or am I better off selling it on....

If it doesn't fit your car I'm interested if it works on my 1987. I'm in the central valley (hot). Are you over in the Napa region?
All the Best,
Gary

As far as I know only 78-82 lsds will interchange with your 82.

In 83-89 they mounted differently than the 78-82 but the 83-84 still have the 8 plates of the earlier better lsds. The 85-89 have the 4 plate weaker one.

It will still command a premium in the used market though

I have an 82 limited slip out of a 5-speed in unknown condition I'd be willing to part with.

It seemed to work while in the car.

I think it would be a good idea to rebuild first before putting it in a car.
I would be interested in the 82 LSD. I need to check if it can be adapted to fit an 1987 5spd. I'm sort of waiting to see what "jheis" is going to do with
his because he lives very close to me. I'll PM him later.

James, thanks for the information to find the "lsd adapter". I'll try MS.

I believe I purchased the last one in December of last year.

It's always worth a call, but online I believe they are NLA.

Does anyone have a handle on which LSD's will work in which MY cars?

Or, can anyone tell me which years the LSD pictured above ^^^^ would fit?

Gary209h checked with Carl to see if an LSD from an '85 would fit in his '87 and was told it would not.

I was under the impression that there were only two versions of the mechanical LSD - the early 8 disc and the later 4 disc. If an LSD out of an '85 won't work in an '87, what years will it fit?

Can anyone tell me which LSD's fit which model years?

An 85 unit should work in an 87......

I've adapted the early ones to the later boxes and have some spare parts I made up I could sell if someone did need to. Would still have to machine 1 flange though.

I am not sure, but it was my understanding that Carl sold his last adapters for this "swap-out" and he did not say it couldn't be done, it was just not a drop in. Lizard, are you saying that you have the adapters, but still need to
make 1 flange? If so, what is the cost? At this point I'm thinking of buying one of Carls custom LSD as I plan on creating more hp down the road.

It's not that I need to make a flange, it's that the passenger side flange needs to be removed and modified.

I will send you a PM
