California Roadside Smog Inspections
After not seeing any for a while, I thought they were done with them. No such luck- here is a video from one of our local Sacramento TV stations reporting on
them: They set them up similar to the DUI checkpoints.

Not sure what they do if the visual finds modified equipment.

I know that San Jose PD has a handful of officers specifically trained by the CHP, to identify high probability CARB violation cars.
It's easiest to say, that the easy tactic for the street cops on CARB duty, is exhaust that clearly is missing a cat by sound..it's unique...and a stained bumper from what I'm being told. But once pulled over, it's crack the hood time.
The road-side stuff, that's different.
If they find issues, you get a ticket for -each- violation, and towed. From there a minimum time in impound may be required, but I am not sure on -that- issue yet. It's a fixit ticket, but comes with a sticker on the ticket that requires a special signoff, that only a very few certain referees can give, and must be done by appointment, and costs a lotta money.
Im hopin to score a ridealong, to learn more, and will report back with more details, and not third party info.

Interesting. Do they only check CA cars, or do they check all cars?
I happen to have high flow cats, but coming from the Midwest, we have no systematic checks, and I have no idea, if they work.

If you listened to the article, it was voluntary.
But Colorado has these..not so voluntary, and they have been challenged on this.
When you agree to the rules, you've given up some rights, voluntarily.

Otherwise they leave you alone. Plus we don't have road worthiness tests like some states so keeping things on the road can be less expensive along with no road salts etc.
We can also drive our 928s year round as well...

For now the roadside checks are voluntary. Many years ago I had an early Jetta, maybe 5 years old. Got a notice in the mail to take it to warehouse that the Bureau of automotive repair (State- not private business) had set up to do random checks. Their employees, not an independent.
The supervisor from the BAR told me their goal was to force anything over 10 years old off the road. Since the newer cars are pretty clean, the ten year remark probably doesn't apply, but they definatly want the cars from the 70's & 80's retired.
