Default PORSCHE /SCCA RACING at Laguna Seca Next weekend 7-22-2016 VIDEO UP (some)

If you are around, come out and check out the PCA race running with SCCA at laguna seca the 22-23 and 24th..... the races are in the 10am to 2pm time frame on saturday and sunday for both my usual group (group 3 ) and the Porsche Club race group too.
the interesting thing about this weekend , is that after the 35 cars allowed for the porsche group, the overflow , (which is about 30 cars) can run with our group in Super production or even ITE if they put on DOT tires. right now we have about 35 cars signed up in group 3.. 75% of them are porsches as of now.

should be a great weekend.. come out if you can

Ill be running brand new hoosiers A7s.. first time ever in my racing career. should be fun!
Now, just have to finish up the header repair (all welded up and read to stick back in ( and mount up the new rubber!)

Mark

Calling Jim Bailey!

check out the Laguna Seca RACE! unreal. 42 cars signed up so far, 10 super unlimited and get this, the most competitive class will be ITE with 17 cars so far signed up. filled with top drivers and pro build cars in califormia along with a bunch of overflow from the porsche group.

I picked a good weekend to put on my first new set of tires!

That should work, I'll have a buddy of mine visiting from the east coast, so you'll have two flag waivers

Hey Jim Bailey!
check out the race line up at laguna this weekend.
42 cars, and an 18 car field of ITE, with some of the biggest names in west coast race car building and racing. (Driving ambition, precision motorwerks, Mullerized, TC design, Jerry Woods, etc etc)
I wonder where the 928 held together with gum and Jbweld will end up!

62 cars are registered for the porsche race and MANY of them are running with us in Group 3, where we have 18 competitors as of now. I havent seen this many top cars in the region in about 5 years!
should be an awesome weekend.
come on out if you are in the area.

UPDATE:
Car running great.... no problem witih anything due to broken exhaust header and it being fixed.

put on the new hoosiers and ran about .5 seconds faster. but, in this close racing that is everything. started 7th after practice just running a leasure 1:37.1 scubbing in the tires vs 137.4 with the old tires running all out, and then ending up qualifying 15th due to that! but it made for a great race and video as i got back up to 10th (many cars didnt show their true colors in qual or the race)

used the good tires in qua and ran a 1:37.2 but the track conditions were a little dicy. lots of oil and traffic. gridded up 12th for todays race (sunday)

the old 928 is doing remarkably well when you think about what it is. the technology out there is off the hook for the 60 porsches in the PCA race and the 20 or so porsches in the group 3 run group. i would say , if the 928 was running in the PCA group, out of 60 cars it would clearly be in the top 3

Mark,

Was watching the recent World Superbike races from Laguna- truly an awesome circuit to ride/drive. High up on my bucket list with Spa in Belgium. The Corkscrew looks truly awesome.

Trust you had a good drive.

thanks Fred! yes, its an awesome track.

Race went well, and ended up 7th overall. dont tell Jim bailey, the 928 shouldnt beat cup cars and cars that cost 5x what it takes to make a 928 a race car! Floggged the heck out of it... felt bad as both races were 110% from flag to flag. the only thing is that the rear end got reallly hot and i started to smell gear oil. synchros were feeling a little knotchy in the last half of the race and Diff was giving out a little.
lots of oil around the passenger side of the transmission. hope it was just hot and puking through a vent.

Mark,

Great stuff!

Running as you do I would think you need a transmission oil cooler [assuming you do not have one] along the lines of the GTS manual tranny or preferably better if class rules permit.

I know it's a trap, but I'll fall in- which is it? If it only pukes oil and gets notchy at the track and not on the way home, then it's heat-related. For starters stick a VDO oil temp gauge sensor in the front trans plug and get a sense of the diff oil temps so you're not guessing.

oh i can tell it was getting hot and things were going bad. ive felt that before and have to shift PEFECTLY or it will be knotchy... BUT, this is the first time ive had oil leak out . im sure its heat related and might be time to get some cooling for those races that beat up the trannie. there are a LOT of hard shifting at laguna as well as the diff working extra hard on several turns, unlike even a turny track like sears. i think maybe the diff might have been heating it up if i was to guess .

You're sure, then you're guessing. Don't guess. Diagnose.
