that's generally true, but you really need to read the #107 restoration thread of the Minerva car, from start to finish. It is likely the best example in the country, and restored to the highest standards. It is a benchmark car.

Clearly, there are at least a couple of camps - those that prefer high level restorations, and those that prefer unrestored fine example originals (among others). Neither is right or wrong, just different, and a robust market exists for each (depending on marque and model of course).

No doubt, Minerva is extraordinary.

Interesting conversation... While I struggle to embrace some of his points on the market, I think docmirror deserves credit for nailing the price estimate at 35k on the black car.

I still don't know if anyone in this conversation actually inspected it. The bidders did, we didn't. Maybe 35k was too much, maybe it was a steal...either way it's one more data point. Not sure mecum was the right choice for the seller, might have tried to get into Gooding instead there's more emphasis on European makes, but those Monterey consignment slots in the higher end auctions are in very high demand.

Funny, I almost posted a comment a few days ago opining that Mecum was the wrong venue for auctioning a 928, but then I looked at their lot listing for Monterey- out of 763 lots, there were 99 (!) Porsches, 52 Ferrari, 19 Jaguars, 13 Lamborghini, and 33 Mercedes Benzes. So plenty of European marques represented... Hadn't really thought through how competitive it must be to get a car slotted into a Monterey week auction.

Will be interested to see the next issue of SCM and its Monterey auction coverage.

I watched some of their coverage Rob, and for over 30 minuites, all of the cars (mostly foreign/exotic) went "bid goes on" - no sale. The money was not in the room, and many cars over the course of the evening did not meet reserve - mostly Porsches. I would not take mine to Mecum. I would look at Bonhams, RM, Gooding as the places to put my car through. I had the marketing director of RM/Auctions America (he is a friend of mine from my Montana days) tell me a month ago to put Blumaxx in at Ameila Island through RM. He agrees that the auction house matters as well as the particular auction location.

That's banning material right there. Be careful.

Join the water, it's a big ocean with few fish.
And when one surfaces, be prepared to buy quickly, be prepared to pay premium, and be prepared to dump some money into restoration.

Face it. You all struggle to to embrace my market method.

No harm, no foul. It sucks being both right, and humble. But - just another job.

Don't do it Alex. He drives that 86.5 all over the place now. I actually took Thomas's advice and put mine up on a lift (aka lift bars) so I wouldn't be tempted to drive it. It's true it hasn't run since being delivered to my house a couple months ago but that's beside the point. Always garaged (or so I'm told), didn't ran when last parked, not professionally maintained by a Porsche mechanic, creampuff, too many projects must sell, no tire kickers Alex only. $49,999.99. Firmish.

As long as you PROMISE not to to start it (I don't want any unnecessary wear on the cylinder walls) it's a deal...

being only a casual enthusiast, I'm happy with my flawed 79. roof and (left rear quarter and door I patched and resprayed) are original color. Rest of car (repainted before me) is a lighter shade. not perfect but interior nice and purchased for under $8K. new tires, clutch master, runs when I want her to. happy.
