The '81 pump is the first year of the aluminum pump, the R&R of which is outlined in the workshop manual starting on page 48-8. The rear cover is a little tricky to pop out as its OD is very close to the ID of the pump housing, so it's easily 'canted' in the bore. If it's stuck try tapping around the perimeter of the cover with the end of a screwdriver or a plastic hammer, it's pressing against a spring.

EDIT: 'Sploded diagram:

Quick summary:

Beat on it gently.

LOL, I couldn't get the back off so I took it to Greg. He hit it with his magic hammer and all the guts fell out. It was a frickin' power steering pump pinata.

Looks like all the in and out messing about damaged the rear gasket. When I installed the pump it now leaks from the rear. So in doing preventative maintenance I took a step back.

Ordered the new kit again from Roger and pump will have to come back to get the rear seal done again. What a pisser.

I found that the new seals were different from originals. The outer teflon seal and o ring are replaced with a single V shaped rubber seal. This must be installed with the open end facing inwards to be 'inflated' by the pressure and create a good seal.

agreed, my issue was that when putting the cover back on the cover went on crooked and too far in on one side, causing damage to the deal when I went to fix it. The deal ripped.

Would anyone oppose cleaning the outer rim of the pump cover to remove the slight corrosion and then put some vasoline on their to assist in getting it in correctly on the first try?
