Default Automatic transmission rear engaging 'kick'

Hello 928 enthusiasts,

My 89 S4 makes a 'kick' when I engage the rear position. The previous owner told me that there's a dampening device available somewhere that cures this annoying problem. Since I'm going to change the trans oil & filter soon, I was wondering if this dampening device was difficult to install or if it's an easy DIY fix & if it exists, where to get it & how much it cost$$$$.

As anyone done this mod & is their any info on 'how to for dummys'?

Thank's!

The only adjustable damper I am aware of is the change modulator that allows the gear change to be either gentler or harsher at the expense of shift speed the ideal being somewhere inbetween.

Cannot remember if that impacts the harshness when drive or reverse is selected as it is so long since I tried without.

Bottom line is a vacuum line runs from the back of the inlet manifold to the gearbox and that must be connected or the change will be very harsh- same if the damper fails.

A fast idle speed will probably cause a harsh engagement [if that is what you mean].

Rgds

I believe I might have what you are describing on my '88. From a dead stop you nail the accelerator and you get what feels like someone bumping you from behind. Interested in a solution or ideas also

I think the OP means he feels a jolt when he puts it in reverse, not a harsh shift between gears (modulator or vacuum.) But in the words of Billy Gibbons, I might be mistaken.

It's more than a 'thump' than a kick. It feel's like when you engage your lawn-mower tractor between reverse & forward; there's no delay or smoothness. It's not that harsh but it's annoying.

Do you think it's ok & can it be fixed?

mine as no delay & it only doe's the engagement on 'R'. You might have another problem if it kicks in first...

Sounds like 80s transmission to me where engagement is like a hammer.

How many miles?

Has the transmission ever been rebuilt?

It's near 90k. The previous owner (from Boisbriand near Montreal) told me he rebuilted parts of the trans & had the advice of a professionnal rebuilder in California...I'm not sure if it was you...
