Default '85 euro auto vs '80 euro s manual

Which one of these would you choose for performance or desirability?

'85 euro twin dizzy with a 5L bottom end but an auto ($2500 cheaper)

'80 euro s CIS with '84 4.7L bottom end (unknown reason currently) with a 5 spd

Thanks for all opinions.

It will be fun to see what
folks say who have experience with both....

Thanks

Desirability will go to the 80 only because it is a 5 speed.

Performance will go to the 85 because of the far better ignition and injection technologies used, also the short gears in that 4 speed auto will send it flying.

The ignition used in the 85 will have far better midrange power so it will be easier and more fun to live with.

Hoi
Have a frank discussion with the wife, get her to 'buy in' to the 928 addiction somehow, some way. You don't need her to be an 'enabler' - I will fill that role quite well for you, as 77Tony does for me. (Make sure you don't cross the line and trigger a divorce or you will have ZERO 928's and survive on Ramen/Pabst). Get yourself a storage facility, and buy them both. (if you don't buy both, send me in the right direction, will you?) Having to choose, as much as it pains me, likely the '85 Auto. With those block changes I'm assuming you are buying these for driving - if you are 'holding' for later price gains, someday it will matter- it does not matter currently, but I would beat the guy up over it $$ wise (unless this is Stan's car - he deserves every penny, because he's like, you know, Stan).

If buying for a driver, the Auto probably drives like a bat out of hell as well (esp. after Stan gets ahold of it) , and the Auto will take more abuse. Also easier to source gearbox/gearbox parts later on down the road.

To me it would matter on what color/interior scheme was more than the drivetrain, but I'm a weirdo that way - I always look for the more unusual. But then again, if its' a driver, maybe you don't want a yellow/orange/minerva/light green metallic car that Police notice like an Easter egg in traffic.

No comparison as the 85 with the RogerBox wins hands down all round.

80 win because of the fantastic mechanical fuel injection (CIS) without any stupid computers

I REALLY like the way my 85 euro auto drives! However, I did have a 79 euro 5 sp years ago and it was a blast! I guess I'm undecided.

Default Euros

The two cars you are talking about, are in some ways more different than alike. I own a 80 euro 5 speed car and I have driven an 84 Euro S automatic a number of times. My Euro is lighter than the 84 by about 75 lbs due to equipment differences. The weight difference only is an impact when you talk about comfort , the 84 sport seats are better and have power. As to driving them the 84 has a far better mid range that combined with the auto trans make the car very much a point and squirt car. The 80 is a top end beast. The exhaust on my car is very open and the car will bonce of the rev limiter really quick. I was shocked that my car was quicker than the 84. But the difference was all about the tires, my 80 runs 285/40 17 tires and the 84 was on 225/50 16 tires. For me I enjoy the constant interaction with the car. But when traffic intrudes the 84 was the better choice.

Thank you so much for all the recommendations. As Olmann stated, I am afraid they are both worthy to own. Maybe I will be looking into a storage facility........

Hoi your 82 Weissach 5 speed is almost done,
got the injectors installed and shes runs nice,
just needs some miles on her before I release it.
I drove it today and it has its own character ,
the 5 speed works well, the engine is strong the brakes are nice.

Since neither one has the correct matching numbers block.... go with the one that you like to drive best.... manuals still have the sporty car bonus but that too is changing as we have a couple of generations now who many can not drive a manual or like Roger are too lazy to shift but in all farness he does have to use the wrong hand (and many know what that is like) . New cars now are only 6 - 7 % manuals.
