928s for Sale
#1531
I have my car on Craigslist if anyone knows someone looking for a really nice 1986 928, 5 speed manual with heated seats, mint interior, panamera wheels, new tires and brakes, new TB/WP service with PKT and also new diaphragms for heat/AC vents. AC works as does everything else and power sunroof too. 26K miles.

Howdy everyone!
I have been a lurker for a while but am considering jumping off the high dive into 928 ownership. Actually headed to see this car today:
https://austin.craigslist.org/cto/5949673555.html
I have read much of the good-luck-here's-what-you-need-to-know-as-a-newbie posts, so basically I know that I don't know at all what I'm getting into. Which is great, I'm ready for that.
Goal for 1st 928 is to 1) have fun, spend time driving because the car works and 2) learn about classic car ownership. I'd rather not spend all my time and money in the shop, and I'm not looking for any concourse ogling. I just want to drive a badass old sports car. Like y'all do.
So, is there anything else any of y'all can glean from this post that I should check out? And does anyone have a current reccomendation for an Austin 928 mechanic?
Thanks in advance,
John

Firstly you may be better served with this being a thread in its own right. ( someone may be able to get that link in the correct format, I couldn't either).
Secondly, at first glance this car will not be a "jump in and drive", it will definitely need maintenance and care, which equals time in the garage (best if it's yours) and dollars, this is largely due to its age, not only what I see in the picture.
As you have stated you have read through the NEW VISITOR sticky so almost all you are looking for when you view the car is in that thread.
TAKE A TORCH WITH YOU, check the engine bay fuel lines on the passengers side, along with power steering lines, they will most likely be original, as you know they will need to be replaced, not expensive if you do it yourself but rather fiddly...
Find out just when the TB was replaced, from the relatively average photo of the engine bay, nothing looks las though it has been recently removed apart from a shiny hose clamp on a water hose.
The hard vacuum line from the plenum is bent or broken, all this suggests to me is the PO does not really care, I am pedantic though, just my 02c on that.
The air filter is in upside down (read above), of course you won't turn it the correct way now!!!
When I took my OB for a test drive and warmed her up I noted any vibrations etc... I also parked her up, handbrake on, and selected all gears with the shifter, I then placed her in P, left her running and viewed the Automatic Transmission sight glass/reservoir to ensure the fluid was between the min/max level, just my way of ensuring the PO had kept that fluid correct.
The interior looks about right for the mileage, oh and I love that phone!!!!
I can't add a lot more John, I am a Newb myself, who spends far too much time thinking about my OB
Good Luck

John that car looks good enough to do what you think your want to do,
for how long hard to say.
What I would do first is put the check book away and go drive a few of them first.
While your doing that , you may find a better sorted out car for close to what your about to spend on this beauty.
NOTE you wont really understand this advice till you follow it, but that will be hind sight.
Good luck on any path you choose.

Not sure this counts as a real 928...I saw the term transgender used recently around these parts...this ones in the GTA.
