Default After 20 years..you'd think I'd read the manual

I have been having a hot start/stall issue and went thru the MM test for most all components via the EZK and LH connectors per the great write ups out there. All tested well so I then assumed it's probably the LH going. Cold start was fine, but after the car got up to temp, and shut down, the car would hard start or stall.

Well I discovered that starting in 1991, internal fault codes can be brought up from memory via the Check Engine light. (I was unfamiliar as I had driven a 1989 S4 for 17 years and it did not have this function as it started in 1991 on the 928)

Well Theo's site shows how to access it and read the fault codes.

http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Technic...3/MyTip302.htm

The code 1214 was the only code in memory. Code 1114 states faulty Temp II sensor, but no 1214 fault. It didn't show up on Theo's list, however, on the 968 forum, they too have this function and it was explained that if a "2" replaces a "1" in the second digit, it means.....INTERMITTENT FAULT!! of the Temp II sensor. This is why it didn't show up when I multi metered it out over the whole temp range.

Going thru Theo's procedure, no other faults are showing so I ordered a Temp II sensor and we will see if it corrects my current hot start problem.

Any of you guys with a 1991 or newer 928 can access the fault memory to check and see if you have any faults without the need for a Hammer or spanner diagnostic tool.

Never too old to learn something new!

By the way, I checked and there is a couple of lines mentioned in the manual that states you can check faults using the Check Engine light, but no explanation or procedure..

There are a couple of pages in the '91 Service Info Tech booklet on the CEL stomp test. Worked well on Anderson's Cobalt GT.

My idle issue was ultimately resolved by replacing the Temp II. Stalling when hot was the most prominent symptom but hunting idle happened randomly. I ran all the diags too and everything checked out. I was one step away from having an "engine fire" while looking up my insurance agent phone number...

The damn Temp II sensor is weak link IMHO that drives many owners crazier.

I changed mine pre-emptively during my intake refresh last winter. Some told me it was unnecessary; it's easy to change later, of course. I think I'm happy I did. Not expensive.

It always seemed unlikely to me that many of these sensors (not just temperature sensors, but many of the other sensors, too) actually fail. What seems more likely is that in the course of replacing them, you must, of course, disconnect and reconnect them, and the connections might have a little corrosion. We know that this is definitely the case with the air bag crash sensors (many threads/posts on that), and it's likely that the same thing happens with other connections.

Seems like it's worth a try to just unplug these sensors, apply some DeoxIT to the contacts, and re-plug them, and see if the problems go away.

I tried the procedure that Theo describes, but I didn't get any codes to display. Am I missing something? They should be displayed in the instrument cluster or do I need an external code reader? I don't have any specific problem, I just wanted to check.

Ok, got it. I saw the flashing, but was not sure. I was hoping it would just display the number in the info display. Thanks Rob.
