Default Buying a Texas car from out of state

Good morning Texans or other who know,

If an out of state person wants to buy a used car located in Texas, what is required as far as paperwork.

Notified signature from the seller?
Bill of sale?

anything special?

Here in PA, we need a signed, notarized signature, from the PA seller in order to transfer title to new owner. Most states do not need a notarized signature.

thanks-Hoi

I think it depends almost entirely on what your state requires, not Texas. Go to your DMV and ask.

The procedures of Texas may play a role in how you bring it home. For example, I flew out to California once and drove a car home to NY. In CA, the buyer keeps the plates (unless custom), and has ten days to register it. I assumed they were good during the drive home. I did not assume anything about insurance - that's far more important; I called them.

California is unusual. Nothing as convenient as this is possible if I were to buy a car in neighboring Connecticut; it either requires two trips (inspect, then go back with plates), or an exercise in FedEx'ing. Something is possible for Massachusetts, however - temporary plates, or something. I may have this backwards, but you get the idea.

I am asking what a owner needs to do to release the title to a new owner. I'm aware that in PA, in order to release a pa title to a new owner, one needs to sign the title in front of a notary. Can't seem to find if Texas requires it or not.

Can't seem to find the info in Texas dmv website. That's why I'm asking for help from people selling cars in Texas.

Thanks

I don't think what Texas requires to transfer ownership of a car IN TEXAS matters at all when you are taking the car out of state and do not intend to register in Texas. BUT, if you want to know the requirements in Texas for selling between private parties, then registering, it's here:

(simply a signed title)

Have him sign the title and send it to you.

If there once was a loan and a bank officer signed off on the title you may need that signature notarized... happened to me on a transfer to California...fortunately the bank was still in business and very willing to "help" ...Not always the case. As noted it all depends on what your DMV requires. If it is anything like California DMV the answer varies depending on who you talk to at the DMV.

FWIW - I sent Alex a signed title, a Bill of Sale, and provided the State of Texas with a notification of transfer. I kept the plates.
