The boot kit for the outer came with the car and I got the inner from another source, the outer boot has an extra bulge after the clamp position for some reason. I thought about cutting it off but figured if there's enough clearance once installed I'll just leave it.
I will do the other side shortly, just needed to get the failed boot replaced this weekend as it failed an inspection.

If I see things like this it always leaves me irked as to whether there is something I am missing through lack of insights. Mine were identical and fitted without issue. It sure looks as though it serves no purpose and will do not harm- some kind of automobile appendix?

It would be interesting to know why it is there if anyone has the inside line.

Thanks again for the help, the other side will be easy now I've done it once....also I don't have to drop the exhaust on that side.

I highly recommend the vacuum method I used to pull the grease through- made thorough filling of the joint a cinch of a job.
Indeed the second one is far easier to do- had that over and done with in no time.
Apart from being messy, post completion one wonders what the fuss was all about. Just be careful with the pinching and make sure the boots are sitting nice and even and the clips well pinched assuming you have the same type I had [??].

Good job...about to do this on the 78....question...!one has just flanges on each end, no spindle. I also have no endcaps. Should I get them, or are they not compatible with my oldie? I am thinking adding them may give me a clearance issue.

Here is a picture of MY80 @ the differential. I doubt the end cap would fit.
