Default VW vs 928

This guy illustrates (with a VW) why many of us drive a 928. It will be interesting to see how many 928 owners have - or once had, and miss - a Scirocco or similar car...

I like the Scirocco, but not enough to own one. They were woefully underpowered and like most VWs of the era, cheaply constructed. Just my 2c.

My sister has one in HS. I remember going on a drive in it with my father who decided to see just how fast this little VW was. At whatever speed caused the dash to shake a little, a 928S4 blew by us like we were standing still.

I'm not sure if that had more influence on selling the Scirocco and buying my sister a rabbit convertible or the fact that he started looking for a 928 shortly after.

Anyway.....this one has been in the garage since about 2001:

I had an 81 last of the series 1, ported, shaved the head, a new cam. It would rev forever, no weight, could beat vettes of the time.

Had to replace the CV joints once a year.

Manual steering, manual windows, lousy heat, noisy, still one of my favorite cars.

Owned a '75, bought it new. Absolutely the worst car I ever owned. Even worse than my '71 Vega and that takes a bit of doing. Why was it a bad car? First valve job at 1400 miles. 2nd valve job at 3400 miles. After that? Who knows how many times VW rebuilt the top of the engine. I think they had it in the shop a total of 14 weeks in less than a year. Refused to replace the car or the engine. Before lemon laws, so I got to eat it. Traded it on a new '75 Monza Spyder. The dealership put the car on their lot, had a fellow test drive it, it stalled promptly in front of a dump truck that totaled it out in a very big way just 2 blocks from my office, so I got to say my goodbys. All that grumbling aside I loved the car when it ran. Handled great, fairly fast for what it was, I enjoyed that part of it, but not often or long. Never bought another VW product since, nor will I....

The VW SP2 has some interesting lines compared to a 928...

I had a Corrado that I swapped a 2.0L 16v with a twinscrew into. A great handling fast little car, but all that torque in a FWD chassis was a problem. Torque steer and lack of traction were major issues. 1st gear was useless except to create tire smoke. 2nd was a bit better, but I still had to be gentle with throttle application to keep traction. In higher gears abrupt throttle made the car want to change lanes from torque steer. It kept me very involved in the driving process.

I sold it and a '66 Mustang project to buy my 928. The Corrado was a fun car, but no regrets. My 928 is even more fun and MUCH more refined.

I had a 1981 Scirocco in college and love it. Easy on gas and so much quicker and sportier than the 78 Chevette it replaced. I've looked for one, but most are rusted out and gone. Can't remeber the last time I've seen one in person.

Now my primary sedan is a 2004 VW Phaeton W12. Still my favorite ride for cruising done the interstate and slinking around town. It's the complete opposite of a sports car. It's quick and quit and rides so smooth, but at almost 3 tons she doesn't like to turn or stop in a hurry.

The Scirocco, like the Karmen Ghia before it (I had a 65 KG) suffered from the weight penalty. When VW put the same motor in the GTI, the Scirocco only looked better...... Always wanted one, though. But only the one wiper version...

Had a 92 Corrado SLC in silver... and have been slowly restoring this 84 Scirocco. Both were/are really fun cars....Not a 928, but fun nonetheless.
(BTW, the paint on the Scirocco was flash silver, had it repainted in Porsche GT silver-slightly darker and deeper)

My 4cyl. Chevy Celebrity Auto beat the late 70's Corvettes. Those poor cars were so under powered that it isn't even funny.

Really close to the '84 we had and still would like to shoot my brother for totaling it out. Would kill for a UrQ.

A 75 Scirocco was my first car...it ran only 6 months out of the year. 3 water pumps in 3 years, CV joints, and 2 Weber carbs. It was broken into 3 times because it was so easy to steal my crap radios out of it. It was woefully underpowered, but very good in snow (unless you high centered it). Was so happy the day I traded it in on my Shelby Charger.

I had a 944 as my first car, but a HS buddy of mine had a Scirocco. That car was just fun. It looked like absolute crap though and he treated it that way too. I always saw it as a diamond in the rough.
