Three Wheelin'
I've ridden in this 86.5 a few times in recent days... starts right up, idles smoothly, runs strong, sounds awesome and looks even better. The timing belt & water pump job is not that expensive especially if you DIY. We just did TWO cars this weekend for under $1K each. This car is NOT perfect, but it shows well and runs well. Arguably, the most expensive items to replace are a good paint job ($5-15K) and just a decent interior restore can be very expensive. This interior looks great, but has the usual cracks in the dash / pod. The rest of the interior is in very good shape and the guards red over black interior with chromed manhole covers is definitely an eye catcher. Very nice daily driver or local car show entry.
But as with all things 928 a PPI is a MUST... dont' take anyone's word for anything - get it inspected. A local shop, Auto Assets, has a certified 928 mechanic on the payroll... and, yes we are lucky because they are hard to find.

Hello jbrob007,
Very good advice. This 928 has a PPI scheduled for Monday morning at Auto Assets. If all goes well, I will have them do the TB/WP replacement.
I am a competent mechanic, and a TB/WP job is definitely doable. However...this car and I are separated by 550 miles.

Hello Farris,
Yes I did.
I have the money to make an offer on this 928. I am selling my soul to the devil at the bank in the morning for money for repairs.
I REALLY want this car...

Thanks,
I have been researching and saving for almost 2 years. I wasn't quite ready to buy a 928 yet.
However, this one popped up and checked most of the right boxes.
I am jumping on it.

The problem is that you have to walk into it with your 'eyes wide open', but you also have to be able to jump fast at a good deal for the right car.
Sometimes you "just know" it's the right car. But you have to be sure.
Getting a competent PPI is a good first step.
Good luck with your decision.

Thanks, Wisconsin Joe!
This has been a bit of a whirlwind. I have been researching, but not been actively looking. This 928 popped up. It pretty much checks all the boxes I was looking for.
It is turning out to be more money than I expected. However, I have decided that if I hesitate, I will lose out.
I have had a relatively specific set of criteria in what I want in a 928. I did not really expect to find the right combination of price/specification/condition. This one pretty much is it.
I don't think I have another opportunity like this anythime soon. I will probably spend more on repairs than I had intended. So be it. I have been steadily saving money and will continue to do so. I am jumping on this and not looking back.
Right, wrong, or otherwise, pending a successful PPI, I am buying my first 928.

Hope the PPI shows nothing untoward and unexpected.
Sounds you're able to do all the 'expected' stuff.
Sounds like you really want this 86.5. Good choice. Go get it.
Best Wishes with it.

Good luck, Seth ! ! ! !
Hope this is just the one you've been looking for.
Man, I just love a red 928.

Thanks, MainePorsche!
The 'expected' stuff is a bit of a rub. It has always been my intent to do all my own work. Unfortunately, with this 928 being 550 miles away, I can't do the work. And, I am not driving ANYWHERE on a 5.0L 32V 928 with a suspect timing belt...
I have found a reputable shop that can take care of what I think it needs right now to make it home:
-TB
-WP
-thermostat
-flexplate clamp migragtion inspection
-oil change
-a few WYAIT things
The estimate is quite expensive(for me). However, I know it will be done right and I will be able to drive the car now. As opposed to spending $500-1000 to have the car shipped to me, then start buying parts myself, and doing the work. Realistically, that could take me a few months.
I am probably just going to swallow my pride, turn on the liquid nitrogen cooling on my MasterCard, and have it done.
Start off with a solid foundation.
