Default My '78 US #412 and all things '78 and '79 related

I wanted to start a thread that focuses on the earlier OB's.

I'm hopping this thread may attention from others who have a car from an era when " M.A.S.H.", "Happy Day's", "Taxi", and "All in The Family" were on TV, We heard "Miss You" by The Rolling Stones and "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees all over the radio and Van Halen 1 was released. The cost of a Superbowl ad was $162,000 and gas was about $.07 a gallon.

The following is what I posted in the other thread about this car that was being auctioned:
I have diligently followed this forum for 3 years. After my '87 944S/968 conversion was totaled back in 2012, I began looking for the Porsche I REALLY wanted when i bought my first 944 in '95. Like many of our middle aged members, I fist fell in love with the lines of the 928 when watching Risky Business. I came close to pulling the trigger on many cars, but finally made my move on this one. (since I could not get "Kermit", "Blumaxx" " Marvin" or "Silver Bullet".

I have read most every thing on this forum, seen every video I found and spoken to many great and helpful folks at this forum. Initially I was aiming for the higher performance of the '85 and up cars. But I gradually fell in love with the mojo of the OB's. I have concern that i will have buyers regret and not be able to care for this car the way it deserves. Living on a musicians wage I hope to learn to do some of the labor my self and hopefully preserve and nourish this fine piece of engineering.

The car is VIN 9288200412 US. Grand Prix white (repainted). It has an excellent green vinyl interior (sans the dash) , no sunroof, and a 5-speed as well as H4's. It has the original tape radio and air compresser too!.

Although being a US spec car,The front fenders must have been from a very early car as they have no EU side markers and only the typical mobile home added lights that one finds on a federalized Euro. The rear bumper is straight US.

I purchased the car today an auction for a total of $4,175 which included their fee's. It was listed as "True mileage unknown" the ODO reads 55k and the condition of some of the bits leads me to believe this may be close or possibly actual mileage. The "928" brake and clutch pedals seem to be in very good shape. Thank you KONAKAT for the heads up on this car right near me. Thank you Jim Doerr and Alex Vandamme for allowing me the benefit of your wisdom and answering my relentless questions .... I imagine it's about to get worse.... consider this your "fair warning"

There are a few issues I have to address before driving it.:

1) There was a water drip near the drivers side front after starting it for a while. I could not tell where it came from with the belly pan on ( the car has a later S front bumper and chin spoiler.

2) I have not gotten a good look at the fuel lines and do not know how to tell if they have been replaced. ( However there is a phone book sized binder with receipts that i have only glanced over. perhaps I'll find a clue there. I will post more pictures later that may show the lines in question. If any see's anything to be concerned about please chime in.

I am not sure what else I really NEED to get done before driving it. I imaging the Timing belt water pump need to go, but from what I understand that may not be that urgent on this early non-interference M28/03
I hate typing , but could write about this car for hours.

...smiling ear to ear Ross Tyrie- Baltimore, MD

I purchased this car the other day and posted many pictures and responses regarding my new grand prix white US #412 1978 5-speed Non sun roof 928. It even has the steel gas cap and original tape deck and air compressor.

I will need to tend to fuel lines and a water leak from the drivers side front among other things.

Here is my Interior

She's a nice one! Lucky find. The black lines and lettering on white looks nice.

I have a special mix CD for mine that has BeeGees, Jefferson Starship, Walter Egan, etc.

PS - Let me know where you locate those water leaks; I've been looking such a long time.

Default Beautiful car!

That interior looks very nice for a 928. I dig the green. Sometimes the stars align for us in unforseen ways. You did your hw and you were well rewarded. Congrats and enjoy what seems like a wise purchase. Keep the pictures and adventures coming please.....

VERY nice shape at a bargain price. The rubber under the hood sure looks fresh. Looks well cared for and protected from the elements over the years. Nice buy.

Great purchase! Unique colors are always a hit in my book. There's a couple things in the pictures that make me think the PO cared about the car.

Some advice from a guy that did it all wrong the first time, I'd first focus on safety stuff, i.e., fuel lines, brakes, lights, etc. and dump all fluids. If you don't have service history, after safety, it would be mechanical like tb/wp, plugs/rotor, filters--everything to get it to a good base line so you know what's what. And last would be appearance. Fortunately for you, the appearance looks great.

Keep the posts and pics coming!

What transmission fluid do you recommend? I do not pickup the car until Tuesday or Wednesday so I am not sure if it's limited slip of not ...if that matters? My first concern is the fuel lines I really don't wanna spend for the GB ones yet if I can help it. If the car has a slow water leak is it ok to drive it for shorter trips and just keep an eye on temp and fluid level?

"My first concern is the fuel lines I really don't wanna spend for the GB ones yet if I can help it. "

These should be your first concern, and if car is a keeper go with the full set of GB lines, it's the last time you will have to do them. If you want to 'cheap out' a bit go with the GB fronts and a 'lesser' fix (i.e. proper high pressure hose with the dreaded clamps on a barb - hey, that's a new quote for a fire - "clamps on the Barbie!") in back and keep a fire extinguisher handy. If the rears fail you likely lose gas (although fire still not out of question)....if the front fail you lose the car and possibly your life.

Fixes that should be done relatively early:
1) Fuel lines
2) ball joints
3) headlight bar clip (will punch a hole in radiator at the worst possible time if not fixed)
4) Grounds - go through them front to back
5) CE panel refresh (NEW fuses, Deoxit 100 on all terminals, go though the relays with deoxit, clean grounds around panel)
6) check your green wire and plug wires for cracks/arcing, etc. A new green wire and good grounds early in your resto can save you lots of trouble later (ask me how I know).
7) change ALL fluids/oil, trans, coolant, engine, brake, clutch. Unless documented in the paperwork.
8) would grab a look at the TB but as you noted if it snaps not a disaster.

From the look of your car and that pic of the garage the car was well taken care of and you may not need much to get safely up and running. Congrats again - so good to see you get a great car after all these years. Glad you got the deal and not some flipper where it shows up on eBay for 10k..

Feel free to call evenings if you have any questions/concerns...

I followed the first "auction" thread, congrats on the new purchase. Looks to be a great starting point, and also terrific that it is in an enthusiast's hands.

Interior colors are great, as the interior condition appears to be.

Good luck, hope you have many years of enjoyment!

Personally I'm a fan of Royal Purple and use 75w/90 on mine, but I don't know about your 78. I also bought a set of GBs fuel lines from Roger last year; and I agree with William--they're a solid investment. For possible water leak, I did something similar when I bought my 84 in Delaware and drove it to Virginia. I brought a couple gallons of water, tape, rags, tools, etc. and followed my wife home at 50mph at 0h-dark thirty. No leaks, but good peace of mind. Also had AAA in case it got bad.

Congratulations with your new car
Impressed with the low initial cost of the car seeing it looks to be such a complete and original car without me knowing the US-market.

Regarding the water leak I would recommend pressuretesting your system. These pumps are well worth the money, or you could perhaps borrow one from someone. I had a leak, took me a couple of minutes to locate. I did not need to put much pressure on the system before it started dripping on the floor, on mine the waterbridge was the sinner. The gasket between the waterbridge and the head, had a Porsche shop change them. But at least I could specify what to change.

I noticed the small Porsche badge next to your center HVAC vents. Is that stock?

Looks GREAT! Congrats.

That car looks very familiar. The door inserts are Rob Budds with the Porsche shield embroidered. What does the back seats look like? Looking forward to seeing you get this on the road.

Thanks for the heads up. I will see if I can get a pressure tester
