Default 928 on Jalopnik

http://jalopnik.com/when-is-the-porsche-928-1765108984

Is the Porsche 928 a car that only existed in the past?

It could also be argued that the spirit of the 928 lives on in the current 991-generation Porsche 911. The new 911 eschews the car’s classic smallness, litheness, and rawness in favor of the 928's comfortable, refined, luxurious approach to sportscardom. The 911's simple air-cooled charm, too, is gone in favor of the 928's water-cooled complexity.

Perhaps the 928 was never defeated. Perhaps it is the victor. Perhaps the 928 never died. Perhaps it lives on today.

Agreed 1000%. I have been saying that myself for quite some time.

Yup. They are a bit behind the times. The 911 morphed into a GT with the 996.

IMO it started with the 993 and has only progressed more so in each iteration.

I've gone back and forth on this.

Actually once the 911 went AWD it stopped being a sports car. So one could argue some 964's were more of a GT than a sports car too.

I would agree with the AWD cars although the stock C2 I would argue is very similar to the early cars. Other than the coil over suspension and ABS it still carries the old school trailing arm feel and sports car rawness. The 993 is far more refined in so many ways. Many features of the 928 added that the 964 lacks.

Default Does the 928 live on in the 991 of today?

According to Rafael Orlove of Jalopnik it does:

The small nimble aircooled 911 is no more. The 991 seems more 928 than 911 according to this writer.

Have you seen a modern 911 next to a 928? It is huge in comparison.

Is that a wheelbase measurement? Just visually, I laugh at the thought of the 928 being "bulky." It appears quite small compared with modern cars today, 911 included. That can be deceiving, but still...

Like Tony above I went from a 928GTS to a 991C2S. I've told many; if the 928 was still in production the 991 is what it would be! It's faster, handles better, better fuel economy, just as comfortable (if not more so) and drives very much like a good 928! The advances in technology on the 991 would be on the 928 if the world economy hadn't forced its demise. I loved my 928's, both the 89GT and the 93GTS, but the 991 is a better car. Sorry Boys, but it's a fact!

I guess it's a good thing for the popularity of the 928 that not everyone shares your opinion on this.
