The more things change, the more they stay the same.

What 928 did you get those numbers from Jim? The weight number is WAY off when compared to say a GTS! I think the rear track numbers would be higher for the GTS too...I need to look them up.
BTW, I didn't think Porsche would be able to make the new 911 better looking than the 997 but they did! Only marginally better looking, but to my eye (probably because it is more 928 like with each iteration) it is the best 911 EVER...in every measurable way no less! Better exterior, interior, ergonomics, speed, handling... Gonna be a hell of a car and I can't even imagine how impressive the Turbo model will be!
Now where is my winning lottery ticket?!

I'm sure many people see what you are saying.
I am not a 911 hater. In fact, I really like the 911s from the middle and late 80s. But, the current Porsches don't give me a good feeling when I get in them, even though from the outside they are looking more and more like 928s. For instance the dashboards from the 911 from around 1985 are much nicer than the current 911s.
Where would the current 911s be without all this modern suspension control? I suspect the basic mechanical design is simply inferior. The model seems to be 1) borrow under pinnings from a sedan and 2) tweak the handling with software. I'm just a hardware man, not a software man.

The lightest stock 928 weight published by Porsche is 3,197lbs for the early Euro/EuroS. All US models were around 3,300lbs or more.

I was just playing with the 2012 Carrera GTS and got no real excitement from it. After a couple days I was ready to drive my 928. Now the 2012 Cayman R I was playing with is a different story after a couple of hours it was hard not to order one.
I am looking forward to the new 911 though so we will see how that goes. I continue to be amazed how big the newer *** dragers feel though and how small my 928 is becoming.

That's right, the early euro-S weighs only 3197 lb, the lightest of all the 928's in a 5spd. There is only one advantage to a 911vs928, and that is since they sit higher, it makes it easier to get in and out of, I don't like the handling of the rear engined 911's(one you can buy used for a realistic price). The new 911's are not worth the money, and the interiors are not as well made as the 928. The cayman's being mid-engined, I'm sure are better handling but they are too small a car in my opinion.

If I didn't have a 928 now and didn't go back and get another 924 or 944 turbo then my choice from "those other porsches" would be a Cayman S in either Ruby Red or Racing Green Metallic with a Tan interior. I love the curves on the Cayman. Maybe in 10 yrs or so after saving up.

When Porsche DESIGNED the 928 as the replacement for the 911 they fixed a number of short comings...........as Porsche evolved the 911 after it's customers refused to let it die.....they fixed a number of short comings. Little wonder it ends up much the same size with similar hp outputs. Porsche Stability Management now makes everone a hero !

Did you guys notice that you can now order the Carrera and Carrera S with chrome around the side windows? That and the new tail makes me wonder, how much they were looking towards Gaydon (England) when they designed the 991.

The Cayman R is a super easy car to drive and most people will feel real confident immediately when they start driving it. You can over-drive the R (987 in general) and not get into trouble. That's not the case with a 911. In fact it takes a trained skill to drive the 911 to it's limit. I find it hard to believe you found no excitement in a GTS but I spend a lot more time with these cars than most not to mention the training,
