Default 928 Won't Start

Hi, I'm new to Rennlist and also Porsches.
Last week I bought a 1982 4.5 928 Manual from an acquaintance of mine. Just couldn't resist. He told me it was running fine and just needed a little work.
I had it delivered to my little workshop, put a battery in it and tried to fire it up with no joy, electrics wouldn't work either. I checked the fuse board and discovered it was damp and wet. The floor and seats were also wet.
I took the fuse board out, front and rear seats out, everything was soaked. I cleaned the fuse board and relays and re installed it. Tried to start it again, turned over but didn't run (I can hear the fuel pump when ignition is on). Also have some electrics back but windows won't budge even though I can hear a click in the doors and the fan or A/C won't switch on either. I'm going to replace all the relays as they look a little worn ( does anybody have the relay part #)
What should I do next ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to talk to Stan [Mr Merlin] about Deoxit! Sounds as though you are going to need a bath tub full of the stuff!

Other than that take a pump action shotgun to your former acquaintance's house and give it some friendly modifications around the window frames!

Suggest you get yourself a set of wiring diagrams for starters, our resident electrical expert is Alan [also google 928 electronics to get to his website].

Sounds as though you are about to have a shed load of fun- welcome to the tank!

Rgds

+1 to DeOxit. Start loading up on the stuff.

I recently cleaned the CE panel in my '82, more as a clean-up than out of necessity. Not sure how much you did to it (e.g. a surface cleaning while it's in the car or a full removal and refresh). But, if you want to take the whole thing out, which might not be a bad idea, there are a number of write-ups on how to remove / clean it. Here's a sample, but I wouldn't do the CLR Bath like the poster did.

Take a ton of pictures along the way, and do not disconnect the spaghetti wires on the back!

I'm sure others will chime in with other advice, but what I've proposed above should at least be part of your next steps. Might not be bad to replace the fuses (they're cheap). The relays run from relatively cheap to more expensive. I wouldn't haphazardly go changing them unless you know they are bad (will require some testing).

As Fred mentioned - get to know the electronics schematics. Alan's site, as Fred suggested, is a great resource.

Good luck, and welcome to the tank!

Thanks Ryan.
I took the CE panel out, cleaned off any corrosion and thoroughly cleaned it with electric contact cleaner. Also opened the relays and cleaned the contacts.

Coolio.

Regarding the windows - could be a number of things...motors going bad, something gunking up the movement, etc. Here, too, there are a number of threads on the topic (searching google with site:rennlist.com inurl:928 helps narrow down searches). Sounds like your door panels will be coming off soon enough

My advice is to spend time on a tech forum BEFORE you buy the car, not after.

Best of luck on your new project!

Default update

Thanks everybody for all the advice. here's an update.

I went to the guys house I bought it off and he assured me it was something minor as he had it running last year. ( also left laiden down with a full new interior, dash, boxes of bits and pieces, etc...)

I went to my little workshop, checked everything again and tried starting it, it turned over but didn't start. I sprayed a little starting fluid through the air filter box and turned it over and it fired up start away, and what a roar !!! but just for a couple of seconds

What's the first things I should check ? I can hear the fuel pump in the back pumping. Oh, the car has been lying up for a year too.

As for the electric windows, I stripped down the doors, pulled the motors out, opened them up and found they were full of crap stopping the motors and spindels from turning. I thoroughly cleaned them with contact clear. Popped them back in and now are working perfectly.

Well, running on "stuff put into the intake" means that you have spark, but not fuel.

Easiest check is a noid light to see if you are getting injector pulse.

Old gas does all sorts of things. Plugs filters, clogs injectors, damages fuel pumps.

Check to see if you are getting proper fuel pressure and flow to the rails (not exactly sure how, never done it myself).

If that's good, you may have to yank the injectors and have them gone through.

First thing you should check is fuel pressure. The test port is on the passenger-side fuel rail, and be careful when you're unscrewing it as there's a sealing ball bearing in there that you don't want to lose. Thread is M12-1.5 so you probably won't find a pressure gauge off the shelf that works, but several of the regular suppliers have setups.

When you say you hear the pump with the ignition on, do you mean while cranking, or just when the key is turned to "on"?

AND.....since no one mentioned it, replace all rubber fuel lines , if it has not been done very recently. In fact, the first thing you should do is replace the fuel filter, clean or replace the tank strainer, replace all rubber fuel lines, and then start tinkering with getting her started, IMHO....I have a fire car sitting in my shop right now, that broke some poor 928 owners heart, because he chose to "do it later". What's left is now parts, but a real reminder as to the danger of old rubber fuel lines. On both my 928 projects, I absorbed the cost of the fuel lines and the labor before I was sure either one would run...safe than sorry rule applies.

As far as running, the 82 is finicky, as I am in the middle of an 82 revival myself. I would replace all the relays, especially if they got wet. Also, check the green wire running from the distributor to the passenger firewall. Of course it is more spark related than fuel, but who knows?

Good luck! Keep us posted, and upload lots of pics!

Thanks guys,

I can hear the fuel pump running just when the ignition is "on", can also feel slight vibration in the fuel tank if you put your hand on it.

I plan to pull the fuel tank out of it tomorrow too.

I'll check the pressure in the fuel rail and also replace all the rubber fuel lines. It's gonna be a busy few days.

Thanks again and Happy Paddy's Day tomorrow too !!!

when you pull the tank do some searching for pictures.
I would suggest that you remove the 2 vent hoses from the junction at the fuel inlet door.

NOTE remove the fuel tank inlet flap 2 screws hold it on, set it aside so its not damaged.
NOTE remove the allen cap screw from the top of the the filler neck

use PB blaster on the clamps,
they should come loose the fat hose to the rear must be disconnected from the top and carefully threaded through the frame as you lower down the tank.

Dont let it bend any more than necessary as you can shear off the port on the main body of the tank.
NOTE there is a fuel return line that should be removed on the fuel tank sender, I have found that this line should also be replaced one you get the tank out.
NOTE use the newest green fuel injection barrier hose FI hose has 12 strands in it, Roger sells it
