Default MM install with engine out.

Hi All,
87 S4 Auto

Installing to the motor.

I have read about the height difference and the methods to get the "fingers" from the mount bracket and the round plate that goes on the bottom...
Mine are a great deal higher...Should I just trim a bit from both pieces and work them in during the install? The distance between the 2 seating faces is 3/8".

Also, Is my throttle cable from the pedal to the linkage broken? I am having a hard time finding a good representative photo for a new one.

Thanx

John

I'd mount them to the crossmember, squaring the top mounting bracket as straight as possible to where the engine mounting holes will eventually be once the engine is dropped into place.

I just edited my post...,have you done it both ways?

It would make my life easier if i put them on the cross member because I could get the steering rack in tonight..

to make these fit better take the lower finger plate put it into a vice and then give the finger a few taps with a sledge hammer this will bend it some so the fitment will be easier.

The easiest way I have found to install the mounts is to put them onto the engine with the hat to block bolts loose .

Then drop in the engine and with a prybar adjust the lower studs in the cross member till they drop in.

With the rack loose drop it down on either end to fit the lower mounting nut.

NOTE make sure the lower part of the mount is properly adjusted so the alignment pin will drop into its hole

NOTE carefully center the upper mounting nut in the Hat to keep things straight,
and then tighten the nut .
I like to use a paint marker to indicate where the center is as once you place the big washer onto the upper stud the mounting hole is obscured.

Your throttle cable is fine the thinner housing fits into the adjustable housing

Thanks Merlin,
Bolting them on now,
These mounts have a smaller stud..I found the torque from Roger but cant remember it.

Have been debating doing the shocks now too, But I have to say enough...

This slippery slope has become vertical!!! SSSSSSSSSSSS

Default Engine is in

Well, I tried it with the MM installed on the engine...The first time!

It was a struggle to get the MM bolts to drop into the holes. In the end I pulled the engine back out and installed them on the cross member. they dropped right in..

Figured you'd have a bitc* of a time, with them mounted to the engine. Especially, if you are working alone. Hard to be letting the engine lift down, top-side, and be arranging the bottom hooked plates on the mounts and aligning the pins, bottom-side, at the same time. With them mounted to the crossmember first, with upper mount bolt/stud loose, you can set the engine right in and start your four bolts per side easily.

At least it was that way for me.

Regardless, two thumbs up on your engine install. It's always nice to refill that gapping hole again with an engine...no matter how it happens.

Excellent! Looks good brother. I can't wait to get to that point. I'm envious. :-)
