I don't see the battle lines, myself. I am considering replacing my 928 with a 911, around a 2000 model or so. Why? I need a Porsche as a daily driver. The 928 is getting too old to be reliable. I also need a Porsche that has 4 seats. The Panamera is too expensive. The Cayenne is. . . well, you know. That's pretty much it.

Thanks, Farris!

Gentlemen, I did not intend for there to be any battle lines in this. I did not write this post as a whining 'woe is me' rant. I would rather get along with any gearhead, regardless of automotive taste.
I had heard about some implied lack of respect for the 928 from the 911 world, but I had never experienced it.

I would like to think that I can appreciate just about anything: V-16/12/10/8/6, flat 12/8/6/4, inline 8/6/4, twins, and singles.

However, I am obsessed with the 928 because it is a bruiser of a GT. That makes me happy.

At least the rennbots weren't as annoying as 911 owners.

This hits on some of the more concrete themes- differences and trade offs among the cars etc.
Editing is a little odd, they start the 996 inspection while talking about the 928, but whatever.

Another crappy video perpetrating uninformed information about 928s.

As a long time 928er and shorter time 996 owner(1999) I can tell you that they are night and day different cars. A 2000 996(911/Carrera) makes for a decent DD with a bit of snarl to it, but it's not something I would commute with regularly, although plenty of people do that. Also, the 996 rear seats are suitable only for micro-people much like the 928 rear seats.

For 996 DD service, I would suggest a tip as the 6 speed is a bit notchy, and the clutch is moderately heavy. I would also suggest shying away from the sport package which is sport seats, LSD, lower and harsher suspension, as it can get a bit brutish after a few trips to the office unless you are on smooth quiet pavement. The 928 has it all over the 996 for DD service, but yes - they are getting on a bit in years.

If you get more serious, hop on over to the 996 board and ask around for other opinions, mine is maybe a bit different than many others. I really like the 996 and would also recommend a 99-00 Mk1 model for various reasons of reliability.

As for the rivalry from the 911 and some folks 'not seeing it', well I can assure you that back in the 70s and early 80s it was real, and in some cases it was pretty serious. The 928 never got the love or respect from the existing 911 family of owners, and that has been widely known, and widely reported in many motoring press examples.

Having owned many of the various models over the years, I tend to consider that from the vintage we are talking about; 85-94 the 928 was the penultimate Porsche available. That surely had to rankle the noses of the cognoscenti who lived and breathed rear flat engine design. Sorry - I guess.

A real gearhead who gets his hands greasy will appreciate another gearhead whatever car he is working on (even a Yugo).
If not he's just a snob.

Exactly....why do people buy a Rolex ?? Hint it is NOT TO TELL TIME !! The phone tells time, the desk top tells time, the car tells time, the microwave tells time and some people even have clocks......
