Default Side View mirror adjust issue- Most likely cause?

Hi All-

My driver side mirror adjustment works fine in all directions.

However, my passenger side mirror only adjusts side-to-side, NOT up and down.

Can anyone surmise the most likely diagnosis here and how is it fixed?

Thanks in advance!

John

I think I can. The adjustment motor has two gears on it that run in two little racks. One works up and down and the other side to side. I think one of the gears, or more likely the little rack, is broken.

There is a little slot at the center bottom of the mirror body in which you can slide a little catch to the other side and take the mirror apart. That gives you access to the motor and it can be replaced. Check 928 International for a good used one.

If you find the gears and arms in the mirror are intact, then the harness is another good possibility. I've had wire breaks where the harness flexes inside the door. It passes from the body into the door inside a plastic tube. Where it exits the tube inside the door there can be a sharp bend or fold that is flexed each time you open and close the door. In this case, the mirror may still adjust with the door in one position or another, but fail otherwise. I cut open the harness sheath at this flex point, isolated the wire that is responsible for the particular adjustment, based on the wiring diagrams, cut the wire insulation for that wire at the flex point and found it broken inside the insulation. Easy fix, although it may break again in the future. You can try to alter the harness flexing to reduce the sharpness of the bend with some reinforcement.

I found one of the male pins in the connector inside the mirror was not making contact. To find this I checked for power at the female side of the connector, then after finding all O.K. I then checked operation of the motor from the male side, again all O.K. I then separated one of the male pins and checked it in the female pins, and found one of the female connections a bit loose. Removed female connection and carefully tightened, no problems now. Clean all connections while you're at it.

The contacts in the "joystick" mirror control can cause problems. I found squirting contact cleaner in at the top, followed by moving it in all 4 planes help solve some of the problems with my mirrors.
