Nice looking 1981 going for $5,500 at auction. Mileage not listed, but still...

Really bad run number.... and nothing "special" about the car.... could easily have been more than the car is actually worth...

Looks nice with no rub strips and the painted wheels.

Perhaps the market is turning up and all 928s are desirable 928s. Some are moreso.

I don't agree, local car, all original full tool kit, certificate of authenticity, and working AC for $5500? I know this isn't a desirable year, but if the interior and paint are decent it's a hell of a buy imo.

Not the most desirable or cleanest example. Engine looks like it sat for a while. And......NO jump cover! The Scottsdale Auction every year has got to be the most overpriced Auction of the year anywhere.

If it as the cleanest example, it would go for $5500. We here have a totally different point of view on these cars than the average public and tend to value these cars a lot lower than those that don't know them.

This place is funny.
$5,500? We have people on this forum putting that much into a paint job on their 928's.

You cannot buy a clean 1982 Corvette for that.
Considered the absolute worst Vette of all time, only offered as an automatic with 200bhp (yes, even less than a US 16V 928) and they weigh as much as an S4!!!! I think a PowerWheels Corvette is faster.

To make this comparison even more absurd, from 81-82 (both equally horrible cars) GM produced 66,013 Corvettes. That's on par with the entire production run of 928's from 77-95!!!!

So please, someone explain to me in explicit detail how $5,500 for this 928 is overpriced.

That 928 got hit in the front. The inner bumper and impact absorbers are fully compressed.
Can see it from miles away. That and the 'lazy eye' left headlamp.
If this wasn't disclosed at the auction, they have no business selling 928s.

Re Hacker's challenge, I would love to hear that argument too. This one was over-sold because it has a bent s**t front, but c'mon... lets hear why a $5500 928 is overpriced, generally.

The bumper shocks are compressed, but I don't know that anything is really bent. My guess would be a very low speed parking lot incident. Mine were compressed when I bought it too, but $50 bucks (928 Intl half priced sale ) and a couple hours of work later and it's all good.

As for value, it's all about the market, right? That's a lot of car for the money, but if no one wants it...

Bottom feeder says: 'Fair deal'. Not great, not bad, but meh - about right.

Let's not forget, the actual cost of this car was over $6500 out the door. BJ got its cut too.

I might have shopped a bit more carefully.

But - I am, the bottom feeder, scum, classless profit-maximizing, non-BJ buyer.

I might be buying, I might be selling, I might be holding - I'm not sure, but I'm not being hypothetical: something has come up.

But there it is: one vote for low prices, one vote for high prices, and another half a vote for high prices (for holding). High prices win - go 928's! So, ease up on the imperfections of 35-year-old cars, please.

Come on Doc, we are not talking about $30k for a GTS vs $20k for a GT vs $12k for an S4.

These threads of "overpriced", clean drivers in the $5k range is a totally different discussion. Once you get much below $10k the small differences between cars become rather moot. The working A/C alone on the car in question could mean $3k in work needed on the cars you posted.

If this car had hammered down at $15k I'd be a bit puzzled too. But $5k??? What does that buy you in today's money? A friend of mine is about to LEASE a GM SUV and the selling price of this car won't cover 6 of his payments.

So what is this car actually worth? $4k? $3k? Are we really getting bent out of shape over a couple thousand dollars?

Whoa there Hoss. I'm not bent out of shape at all. I said it was a fair price. Mebee I would have paid the $6500 for it if I saw it in person, mebee not. either way, the 928 is an iconic car, for buyers who want something different and don't have six figures to play with.

Frankly, based solely on a 'transportation' question I think it's a fantastic deal. Even the mid-80s 928s are decent performance compared to the equivalent purchase of a Dodge truck, or late 90s Camry. Based on the collectability aspect of this deal, it's a fair deal. Still plenty of money to be spent getting it back to original restoration quality.

So, lighten up Francis. I'm not bashing the deal, but I'm not endorsing it either. Lets also not forget from my perspective. I am - the bottom feeder, and I don't see a lot of Franklins in it for me.

A good straight 928 for next to nothing? If it was in my area I'd buy it. As you said, what are people spending on those horrible SUVs and pickups that they never haul anything with?
