You are the self proclaimed bottom feeder so I have to pick on you once and a while.

Auctions are an odd experience too. Many people go there to buy something with a wide range of possibilities in mind. That day, that time, that auction this car looked right to someone, that's usually how it goes.
I recall many collector auctions walking around after cars were won to overhear the new owner on the phone with their mechanic or expert back home with conversations like this:
"No, it's doesn't appear to be leaking from there, or there...maybe a little there....runs fine...yea...yea.........what? I know what I'm doing, what do you mean garbage?? I did not waste my money!!!!"

It got ugly from there, car in question was a white Ferrari Mondial.

IIRC Brad (OP) went to an auction with thoughts of purchasing an early muscle car and ended up with low mile 928 OB in excellent condtion for what 20k ? (and IMHO worth every penny) What would it cost to get that $ 5500 car to Brads OB level, 20-30k? and it would be a respray. Big price gap between $ 5500 and $ 20,000. Condition rules.02 T

Fair enough, someone needs to call me out on my asshattery - might as well be you.

I've been sitting on my red Mondial waiting for it to go up in value for 15 years. So far - meh. At least I get to drive a prancing horse once in a while and listen to that flat plane whine.

You RC, Tony. Mine is also a 1981 in the same color.

There's not much of a description of the $5,500 car. I didn't see any mention of mileage, for example. I suspect the buyer is still grinning, though.

Agreed, but I HATE the bald face lying aspect - from the ad:
"we have listed it for sale for one of our clients thats buys and collects classic vehicles. he is very particular about his cars and this one is very very nice..."

this certainly implies the seller is representing somebody who has owned this car in a collection for some time, and there is a known provenance to it. There is no reason to be dishonest. Why say anything about its history in the ad?

Also, if the alleged collector "owner" were so particular about the cars in his collection, then why a filthy engine bay? it can be seen in the original link above.

Or this... (from the ad)
...and all body lines and gaps look excellent...
Would imply that they reviewed the body lines and gaps.

Did they not see the poorly aligned hood, or sunken left headlamp, or the front driving/foglamps pushed in 1"?

Were Phone Dial wheels ever painted white from the factory?

White wheels on white cars was very early 80's popular.

You could get anything you wanted from Porsche.
Could've been factory, or dealer, or had it done on your own after purchase.

Thing about it is... The seller doesn't really know for sure, but finds the need to embellish yet again.

Any used car dealer could be called a "collector" they simply do not plan to KEEP THEM for very long . But this add is rather misleading at best

It takes special skill to select just about only Ferrari model which hasn't gone up in recent times. Just today there was California sold in Paris auction for close to $400k and that's for modern V8 model. There is explanation for this madness, sort of. It was one of just five made with manual gearbox. Even Mondial's have gone up a little but recent auctions in general seem to point slowdown or full stop for price hike we have seen in recent years. Possibly even burst of the bubble. Almost all cars offered today had difficulty in meeting low estimates. Some were sold up to 30% below it and there were only few which went above upper estimate. It's going to be very interesting auction season this spring. If current downturn continues its possible prices start to go down in general and good old days of few years ago might be back for Ferrari buyers.

I know it was popular, but I was wondering if it was an "offered" option (I also realize that Porsche would do just about anything for the right price).

I put the VIN in the "Check" thread and it doesn't show on the options list.

No big surprise. This ad has all sorts of red flags.

I especially love the middle pic - from the auction with a "Sold" sign on the windshield.
