Heat Issues

Hi all from Queensland. I have had my 928 about 3 months now and have worked thru most of the issues but there are a couple of things that have me stumped
I have removed the front muffler and replaced with 2 straight pipes because it was rattling and the problem I have is the amount of heat radiating thru to the cabin, even the gear shifter is getting quite warm. I think it was heating up before the muffler removal but have been thinking of wrapping the pipes the same as my motorbike. There is a metal shield but I'm wondering if there should be insulating material in there, just assuming that the exhaust is the problem.
The other issue is the temp light comes on after less than a mile from cold but the gauge seems to be correct all the time and the engine doesn't feel hot, maybe the sender unit?
It's the middle of summer here and I don't need this added heat as my air conditioning clutch isn't engaging so was wondering if I can somehow test it by jumping it and then work back from there.
I have cleaned all the fuse box and fuses as well as the earth points

Paul,
Ya got a few problems there.
The heat from the exhaust may be flowing up as hot air through the shifter. There's foam block between the torque tube and the body that should seal it off. If that has shrunk or the TT is hanging lower (bad engine or tranny mounts) then hot air will travel up. Some heat wrap on the pipes may help.
The temp sender may be bad. I'd replace it.
The A/C can fail a bunch of places. Perhaps there's not enough Freon. After that, I'd look at the pressure switch. It is closed when there's pressure.

Yes to putting 12V to the clutch and working back.
Search for Wally Plumly's A/C trouble shooting doc and
http://www.dwaynesgarage.norcal928.org/
lots of threads on A/C problems.

Thanks for the replies
I have been a bit of research on the A/C and it seems that when you move the sliders you should hear a thump as the vents open and close. When I move my sliders nothing really appears to happen and tha slider pressure is very light, so I'm thinking of removing the unit to check for broken linkages etc as well as putting power to the clutch to check it and then going from there.
Regards the foam in the gear stick area would this be accessed by removing the console or from underneath?

Do you have automatic of manual HVAC? That is, are there temperature numbers along the slider?
The foam block is attached to the torque tube and is wedged between the TT and the body tunnel. You won't be able to fix it directly without lowering the TT and that's a lot of work. I'd leave that until it's removed for mechanical servicing. (If ever)
You might consider using some household insulating foam, the aerosol expanding type, and seal the box from above. This may be a terrible idea. Also, the foam expands a lot and could get into the mechanisms.
If the heat is really bothersome then, as a first step, I suggest removing the shifter and boot and looking into the cavity. Maybe drive it with the trim/boot removed and see if there's a lot of hot air flowing up and it's the source of your heat problem. Maybe the boot (bellows) is torn and replacing that'll give sufficient relief.

First attack might should be new motor mounts, as that is the most common cause of the hot air around the shifter.
Second attack should be to read both my and Dwayne's write-ups and learn how the HVAC system works - that makes repairs a lot easier...

I decieded to try to get my a/c compressor going by wiring it to 12volts for a second but discovered that there appears to be only one wire connected to it visible from the engine bay anyway and this goes to earth. I believe the plastic connector in the photo is for the a/c but have nothing to connect it to. I am wondering if the now earthed a/c wire should really be connected to the terminal

Thanks Malcom seeing your reply I took a punt and connected the wire to 12v while the motor was running and the clutch engaged so thats one thing I can eliminate. The connector I believe to be the a/c feed has no power registering so I will now replace the seals and get it gassed and if it still doesnt work i will start checking all the various parts

I decieded to go and check the pressure switch and found it was closed so when I jumped it the compressor kicked in so then I touched the gas valve there was virtually no pressure in the system so it looks like a good result.
I would like to change the seals and do any maintenance that could be done on the compressor since it is pretty much empty of gas but wondering how big of a job it would be

Hey Paul, there is also a bunch of Landsharkers here in SEQLD. You might wish to also tap into the local guys in Australia on Landsharkoz. Where in Sunshine Coast are you? I am based near Bribie Island & Caboolture.
Cheers

Hey thanks I will have a look at landsharkoz, I'm pretty new to the 928 scene. I'm in the mooloolaba area and it would be good to meet some other 928ers
