I would have been more inclined to fill it up if all of it didn't fall out the oil seal side.

im not saying that its not needed... I just think everyone gets a little too lathered up about the oil and its real function.

calling them springs is a stretch too. they are bi-metallic wasters. they produce a lot of force and without any movement. for their to be damping, there should be some movement, right? seems like the fluid is for when things go wrong.

i know!!!! and hear ya!

but, i do like the notation, and gain much comfort that if you loose all the fluid, the tensioner performs just as its predecessor does, albeit without "damping". sounds like its some fine tuning feature, that comes into play in some cases where there is belt resonance, of if the belt is too loose, it can help from a tooth being skipped. I think at proper tension, there doesnt seem to be the force available to really move the tensioner piston in much of a distance.

Im on a roll.. im going to continue to see how long it lasts without oil. 14 years and counting!

Yes, without oil the tensioner functions the same as the pre-83 tensioners that were designed for the single-cam 16v engines. But as the engines got bigger and the cams multiplied, Porsche made some changes. Most of which you seem to deliberately avoid.

You have a nice motor, why not treat it to a S4+ tensioner and WP and a Gates belt, and assemble the tensioner properly so that it doesn't leak?
