Default Timing belt Water pump and Poken tensioner install

Well folks i am going to attempt installing a New water pump, new Gates belt and Poken tensioner in my 85 . I downloaded the instructions for the tensioner from Kens website. My question for the Gang is Am I missing anything? What problems can I expect .(or what can I do to avoid them) I am eliminating the air pump as well, and installing all new hoses , Thermostat and gasket, as well as all new outer belts.
Into the Belly of the beast..

Most of the interesting info - PKtensioner for dummies - written by Rob Edwards will help a lot.

Hi Mark,

I recently did it for the second time on an 86. The hardest part will be reinstalling the belt.If you have the cam timing tool its a goods time to use it. I deleted the air pump on the first one, didn't do it the second time. I'm not certain that there is much gained by deleting it. No beer till the job is finished.

Good Luck

PKT is basically the same on all years - size of the WP hole is different so you have two plugs. Do not use the dog bone. Pay attention to which bolts need sealant and you will be good to go.

I'm almost done with my '86. Everything so far has been pretty straight forward. I was initially a little confused on how to put together the tensioner and also which hole to plug on the water pump, but figured it out eventually. Defiantly need to print out ALL 3 pdfs from Kens site. I have taken plenty of photos so if you need any pointers or get stuck let me know I will be happy to share.

I will take a bucket full of shilt for this but -- do NOT move the crank around to 45deg to remove the belt. Lock and leave it at TDC and do the line up with the tick marks on the back of the cam pulleys. Most of the harranging comes from people who post here saying 'help! I moved my crank to 45deg and now I can't align it anymore!'.

Flame on.

Why couldn't someone align it after having moved it to 45deg? Failure to mark the cam sprockets?

Search -> Advanced search -> 'cam alignment' in the window, -> select 928, hit enter.

The cams don't want to stay put when you try to align them at the 45 mark. Makes it a real beoch to get timed correct, but it can be done.

the driver side moves and needs to be held... but at TDC, the passenger side is the problem... either way, its a bitch... think its easier at 45 degrees though.

If there is any chance you will be delayed, (do it anyway) take pics as a record as you go. Bag and tag bolts, etc. You might want to make a template of the WP bolt holes and what goes where. IIRC there are 3 different lengths of bolts on the thing and they are not interchangeable. Take your time. Good luck, it's really a feeling of accomplishment when you finish, and turn the key and she fires up.

Hit all the WP bolts with PB Blaster and let it soak in... for a while. The bolts are fine thread, small (10 mm I think) and may have some corrosion over the years. Go easy on it when loosening... you DO NOT want to break one off in the block... PITA!

I have heard that using a makita impact battery power unit can take them out without breaking them. I would definitely recommend that.
