So all this talk on water pumps got me thinking. When I bought my S4 the PO had done timing belt, water pump, PK tensioner, motor mounts and oil pan gasket. There is a local guy in Toronto that sells 928 pumps for $169 cdn, so I got Roger to track down the order from the PO because I knew some of the parts came from him. Low and behold, the guy ordered all the parts from 928's R Us EXCEPT the pump. So the only conclusion is my car has an Audi tensioner and a Chinese pump, not a good combo!

Looks like I will be contacting Ed for a guardian pump...

The story I heard was that 928intl's rebuilder retired, or passed away, and the quality of the rebuilds went downhill so they stopped selling them.

I also understand that they have a different rebuilder now that they are comfortable with.

Just curious at what time period was the 6 failures.

Very interesting read but many opinions, thanks to all for the great info.

The way I see it I have 3 choices on "my 89 from Japan car" because I use the Audi tensioner

Greg only uses Porsche OEM (plastic Impeller)
Lazlo has a preferred plastic impeller and since I have the PKT i can use it (if I understand correct)
Geba is the cheapest but has a steel impeller.
Eds pump is great and I would consider it but I didn't see a price

Roger, Guys, is this correct

That's about it - what ever you do use a new pump. Check out Ed's pump - worth a look.

I have one (in the process of that job now) that cost a bit shy of $500, with gasket.

My prices for current acceptable pumps ----
77 to 86 New Laso with a Porsche gasket = $355
The above can be used with any year car when coupled with a PKT.
87 to 95 GEBA with a metal impeller and new Porsche gasket = $295
77 to 86 New Porsche Pump plastic impeller and gasket = $850
87 to 95 New Porsche pump with plastic impeller and gasket = $1025

Then there is Ed's pump at circa $500. Also an acceptable pump but I do not sell it currently.

If can, you should bring it back in the fold.
